It varies a lot, depending on what exactly you get, and for some reason are much more expensive than sheep. Generally I find them listed for between $100 and $200 each. Try the bulletin board at Miranda's or Del's in Hilo. They usually have goats available.

I have several goats of my own. I paid $100 each for 5 week old wethers (fixed males) on which I then spent another $100 each for milk substitute to bottle feed them, worming medicine and injection supplies for vaccinations. When I got them they had all their shots except the last round, which I administered myself.

Goats are great fun if hand raised and bottle fed. They consider the feeder "mom" and part of the herd. They don't do well alone but need a group of 3 to 5 for that herd mentality. Mine are social, fun, loving, playful and eat nearly anything though I spoil them with sheep & goat chow (I house them in the same pasture with the sheep), papaya daily and fresh greens of either banana leaf, ginger leaf or Wiwi leaf, plus I turn them out of their 1/2 acre yard to open pasture a couple times a week to graze on tall fresh grass.

Have fun with your goats!!!

Has anyone had problems with hoof rot? A couple of people I talked to said their goats died from hoof rot.

I keep them in a pen where there is not much dirt. Mostly lava rock. Some other people I know that have goats keep them in a pen with cinder. So there feet aren't wet all of the time. We haven't had any problems with that.

Thank you very much. Now I feel a lot more confident about getting a goat. I hope I can find something soon. I wanted to surprise my husband for his birthday.
