Are any orchids salt tolerant? - Tolleys - 10-02-2007 I am new to orchid growing, but would like to try and grow them outdoors. My house location is HPP and it receives some salt spray. Thanks in advance for your advice... Susan RE: Are any orchids salt tolerant? - Andrew - 10-02-2007 Hi Susan: I'm far from an expert but I would doubt if orchids would do well in a salty environment. You should check out Akatsuka Orchid Gardens on the way up to Volcano. They would know if any are salt tolerant. http://www.akatsukaorchid.com/ Andrew ______________________________ DiveHilo Dive Club Website: http://www.divehilo.com/ RE: Are any orchids salt tolerant? - Kapohocat - 10-03-2007 Susan - I am not as close to the ocean as you are but my orchids seem to thrive. I might suggest in your plan to set them back where they get some protection from the wind (which would lessen the salt spray directly on them). Where's Mitzi??? She is great at this stuff!! RE: Are any orchids salt tolerant? - Tolleys - 10-03-2007 Cat, Thanks for that input. I do have a protected area in mind. I will give it a try. I am just not sure wich varaity to start with. Susan RE: Are any orchids salt tolerant? - missydog1 - 10-03-2007 Start with the cheap variety -- til you know. ;-) I've seen happy orchids not far from the ocean. If they're tucked into hapu'u that's a good spot. They grow commercial dendrobiums on Kapoho Farm Lots which are not on the ocean but not far either. Dendrobiums are pretty tough. I would also try vandas and epiphytic orchids which are both super easy. RE: Are any orchids salt tolerant? - emorata - 10-04-2007 i would also agree that you can't go wrong with cheaper varieties that are easier to replace, that includes dendrobiums, epidendrums, vandas, miltonias, cymbidiums....you can get these all inexpensively at makuu...good luck alot of people just keep them potted in a protected area, so they should go okay in your protected area also.....they seem to do well for me in filtered areas...mostly morning sun works best. best, noel RE: Are any orchids salt tolerant? - Tolleys - 10-04-2007 Thanks to all for all the input. Susan RE: Are any orchids salt tolerant? - Kapohocat - 10-04-2007 Another good place is the Farmer's market behind Liquin's - Kahuna Scott help me out here with your friend's name with the orchids up there. I got beautiful orchids last Sunday for $2-4 each. And one big giagantic one in a gal pot for $10. RE: Are any orchids salt tolerant? - Tolleys - 10-04-2007 To my surprise today, I saw orchids growing in my neighbors plumeria! They were in bloom and looked great. I can't belive I had not noticed them earlier! So I guess they can take some salt spray and wind. Susan RE: Are any orchids salt tolerant? - Mitzi M - 10-11-2007 One of my favorite things about living here is that you kinda can't go wrong with orchids. Since most orchids are epiphytic and adapted to high moisture from rain and mist they do resent salt. Many mainland orchid growers use reverse osmosis or rainwater to avoid salt build up from minerals, which can cause leaf yellowing, black spots and may even kill the plant. So I don't think they would thrive in salt spray very close to the ocean. However, since we get so much rain in Puna, I think they'll do well if they get a good rinse regularly and have at least a little shelter from salt spray and direct sun. I have a big sprawling collection myself that live outside under part shade. Since they get the rain, I only water them when it's really dry and remember to foliar feed them maybe once every couple of months. In spite of all this they look pretty good and bloom well. I also love to buy them at the Maku'u market. There are some great deals and a good selection. I especially like the ones Matias sells at his "Wonderful Orchids" stall there. He is super knowledgeable and I'm sure would be able to tell you what orchids might be a little more resistant to salt than others (and he's fun to talk with too!) Akatsuka is another candy shop for the orchid lover. When I go in there I think I'll be struck blind by all the intense colors, so get ready!
