Limes - macuu222 - 02-28-2008 We have a bumper crop(hundreds)of excellent quality Tahitian limes. These limes put the ones sold in the stores to shame. We were wondering if anyone knows where we might possibily sell our limes (besides selling them ourselves on the street corner)and make a few dollars for our efforts? Do the supermarkets buy produce from locals? RE: Limes - Nalu - 02-28-2008 I used to work at Down to Earth on Maui many years ago, and they would buy in smaller batches from individuals that were either organic or unsprayed. Worth a check to the health food stores here to see if they do the same. They prefer to support local. Angela RE: Limes - Kelena - 03-01-2008 May I ask where you got your lime tree and where in HPP you are located. I have been thinking of putting in a lime tree (for home use -- I promise I won't flood the market!). RE: Limes - macuu222 - 03-01-2008 We purchased it from "Plant It Hawaii". A dwarf Tahitian variety. We live on 5th in HPP. It took approx one year from the time we planted it until it started to produce. After two years it now produces hundreds of limes a year. It needs full sun, dirt cinder mix soil about 3 to 4 feet deep and alittle fertilizer twice a year. It's the most vigorous fruit tree of all the fruit trees we've tried in our area. Makes for great margarettas or coronna's with a lime twist in the top of the bottle.[] RE: Limes - Kelena - 03-01-2008 Oh, yeah. I'm big on margaritas and I am getting pretty good at my speciality: lilikoi margaritas. To make those really good, you need to moisten the rim of the glass with a lime, and then apply the li hing mui powder. So, want a lime tree planted for when I get there. A couple more little questions: 1. How tall is it? 2. And is it in some kind of container or raised planter? How do you plant something that needs 2 -4 feet of soil on lava? Puka? RE: Limes - macuu222 - 03-01-2008 It's not very tall...maybe 7 feet. We had parts of our back yard ripped a long time ago. They ripped down about 3 to 4 feet in one spot. It looked like an excavation for a large built in swimming pool. Then when we moved here permanently, we got 3 large truckloads of cinder soil mix from "Brysons Cinders" to fill it in. Everything we have grown in that area has performed beyond expectations. RE: Limes - Beachboy - 03-03-2008 Macuu222, I'd try Nalu's angle....health food stores. That is an excellent idea, yet at the same time you might wanna try 'Mom & Pop' Stores too. They tend to be open to buying products from the local population. I gotta get me one of those trees too! They grow everywhere wild in Tahiti. On the Island of Huahine, in Lake Maevaa, there is huge amount of small cherry like clams. I use to go clamming there all the time. While on the way home with my catch I'd pass countless amounts of Tahitian Lime Trees. Of course clams taste best fresh right from the lake. So I'd find myself a nice spot to sit down, take out my trusty knife and proceed to have a fresh clam lunch on the spot. Pop open the clams, and squeeze some fresh lime juice on the clam and suck it out! It didn't take long for me to start to enjoy clams served up this way. As much as I enjoy opihii...it couldn't even hold up next to these fresh clams that are only found in one place in all of French Polynesia....lake Maevaa!!! Ball park figure, how much does a Tahitian Lime tree cost? Currently I have a Kiffir Lime Tree from Thailand growing on my property. Kiffir Lime Tree for me, is mainly for the leaf( Iuse it in my curries). So I'd like to have a Tahitian Lime Tree for the fruit![] "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." - Albert Einstein RE: Limes - pslamont - 03-03-2008 I have a couple nice lime trees from Plant It Hawaii... got my first lime the other day.... sweet!!!! Just another day in P A R A D I S E !! RE: Limes - macuu222 - 03-15-2008 Thanks for everyone's advice. The Pahoa health food store is very interested in our limes. They said to come in Tuesday when the produce buyer is there. They said they are always interested in buying local produce vs getting it from the mainland. RE: Limes - macuu222 - 03-18-2008 Brought our limes in today to Island Natural Foods in Hilo. They told me that they were the best quality limes they have seen in quite a while and purchased our entire stock. They also want to buy more when they become available. WOW... Maybe I should buy some more lime trees. They seem to like my location. |
