Any good pet/aquarium stores in Hilo? - ohanamama - 03-18-2008 I've been looking to turn my 150g freshwater fish tank into a saltwater tank, problem is I can't find supplies. Walmart didn't even have enough gravel to re-start my freshwater tank - only 2 medium bags! (Guess I should have shipped that too!!) I tried Staceys today, same story. They did have some sand, but only a few small bags - not nearly enough, and only 20g powerheads. Has anyone ever used sand/rock from the beaches? Altho I would feel too guilty to take any sand from the east side of the island!! Sooo where's a good place to go? RE: Any good pet/aquarium stores in Hilo? - Guest - 03-18-2008 You might wanna ask someone associated with the Big Island Aquarium Society RE: Any good pet/aquarium stores in Hilo? - Guest - 03-18-2008 Ok... my joke for the day: The Fish and Flush RE: Any good pet/aquarium stores in Hilo? - jdirgo - 03-18-2008 Its in Kona, but try Stockley's Aquariums. Not that I would know or anything, but I've heard that black sand from Kalapana is really good in salt-water aquariums. Really, its just a rumor. Not that I have a 150-gallon salt-water aquarium or anything. Nope, nothing like that. It is a nice natural looking brown gravel about the right size to work with an undergravel filter and it isn't all that expensive, either. Del's has it for the chickens to eat so they can digest stuff in their crops. Have you tried Aqua & Aviary Hobbiest? He is a nice older Japanese gentleman named George who has a pet shop behind his house in upper Hilo. U'ilani Street, I think. To get there I go up Wainuenue street to Komohana and across upper Hilo on Komohana. Go through the four way stop and the next right turn (mauka) is the street the fish shop is on. About three quarters of the way down the block is a house on the left with pink flamingos in the front flowerbed and sort of a feed store bird cutout on the mailbox. Turn in there and behind his garage is the door marked "Entrance". That's about the only indication from the street that is it a petshop. There are some water lily ponds in the fenced area across the driveway but I don't know if those are his or not. He has some saltwater fish, lots of freshwater fish, birds and the occasional turtle. Better fishes than Stacey's and less expensive, too. George may have saltwater aquarium sand, I've never looked for it so I wouldn't know if he has it in stock or not. If you decide to continue with freshwater fish, then there is also "Richard the Guppy Guy" but he has even less of a store than George. Really, really nice guppies, though! RE: Any good pet/aquarium stores in Hilo? - lquade - 03-19-2008 ah yes holtzcats i didnt know how to explain to get to georges... he does own and sell the water lily also. he made me an excellent deal on real aquarium salt when i needed some and didnt want to buy a 50 pound bag.... it is worth the confusing trip, but you explained it well... RE: Any good pet/aquarium stores in Hilo? - ohanamama - 03-19-2008 Looks like I have some journeys to make! I will be sure to seek out Jedi Fish Master George! Thanks to all! RE: Any good pet/aquarium stores in Hilo? - Hotzcatz - 03-19-2008 George is a sweetie but quiet and kinda reserved. He has really nice fish though. IMHO much better than the Stockley's in Kona and Stacey's. There was another fish store starting up over on the Southpoint side of Kona, I forget the name and it was several years ago they were starting. Dunno if they survived or not. There are several other hobby sort of fish breeders here and there but I'm not sure exactly where they are. Over on Maui near Kula is a really nice discus breeder but I haven't gone to his shop. RE: Any good pet/aquarium stores in Hilo? - frossie - 03-19-2008 I second the recommendation for George. But, I also wanted to say that I got two huge bags of coral sand from Walmart not so long ago. The trick is to look for it outside - by the garden exit where they have the big bags of soil and stuff. RE: Any good pet/aquarium stores in Hilo? - ohanamama - 03-19-2008 Aha!! I never thought to look in the garden section! Punaweb has all the answers!! |
