Aloha Everyone..
I want to create a hedge to have a sense of privacy between my home and my neighbor..I'd like to get a plant that is already a bit mature cause I'd like to have a 7 foot hedge in a year.
I've been told the plant that would be good for this purpose that will grow the fastest is Podocarpus..I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with this plant? And also where would be a good nursery where I might get a good price, since I would need to buy a pretty large amount of plants to go the length of the property?

Podocarpus is a nice, fast growing plant that is often used on property lines. It will easily exceed seven feet in height though......up past twenty feet unless trimmed. They are a bit bushy and wide when full grown - so you don't need one but every five feet at most.
I've heard of them in small pots at about $1 ea. Larger sizes- I can't say. They are relatively fast growing. There is a line of them on the right side of the airport road as you approach the post office.

My neighbor put in some along our line. They are nice looking plants. I think they paid $5.00 each. They were 16"-18" when planted last year and they're pushing 3' or more. He planted them about 5' apart so they would fill in quicker. I believe he got them from one of the regular sellers at the HPP sale held at the Hui(about 16th and Makuu) 2nd Saturday of each month. BTW.... the more you water them the faster they grow. The few by his laundry discharge are almost a foot taller than those at the other end.

there are a few palms that are shorter and have many stems that do not grow tall and are dense, i can't remember the name of the type i wanted to mention, but i think they are mostly in the phoenix robleini genus....someone else may be able to chip in on this....pandanus also makes a very nice screen and have sharp leaves to ward off intruders.

If you want an instant hedge, run strings back and forth and grow lima beans on them. Lima beans last several years and grow really thick and lush. By the time the beans are dying off, the hedge should have had time to fill in. You could space lima bean plants between your hedge plants and let them grow up above the hedge plants while they are getting established.

Just to be a friendly neighbor, you might want to ask your neighbor what they would like in between the two of you.
Ti Leaf makes a nice "hedge" and also looks nice.

I planted a podocarpus in my yard in Northern California. Some species are really TREES. It can be cut to hedge shape, but in nature most varieties are trees, some reaching 75 feet. Something to keep in mind!

This is a good cite. It mentions that the range of size for this plant is 1-25 meters. You need to pay close attention to the species you are buying.

craigs list about a week ago, scroll down, someone had podocarpus 3-4 feet tall for 6 a pot... they would take off pretty fast...

You may want to get a variety of plants. We have a few varietis of red & green ti, different varieties of croton, dracenea, papaya, finger palms and red ginger. You probably can get a number of these as cuttings for free. I know everytime we trim we offer them and the plants almost always can use a trimming! most of these can grow in farily well in a couple of years, and you can always use a fast cover while the others get established.
