Pheasants, Guineas, Peafowl - Andy - 04-17-2008
Hi all,
Was wondering if there is anyone out there raising Pheasants, Guineas or Peacocks. I am a long time Pheasant breeder and would like to continue the hobby when I arrive on the islands. Importing birds from the mainland is a pain! I plan on bringing my incubator with me so shipping eggs over is a possibility.

i have seen all three advertised... i know there is a guy in kau that does exotic pheasants for a hunting club and sells too and i have seen both guinafowl and peacocks here on craigs list... although i have been trying to find runner ducks with no success.....

Before you begin importing eggs, please consider the impact of introducing new species, or more of the same, if they are released or escape. We do have native bird species here that don't need any more competition for resources.

There are allready plenty of peafowl around semi wild!
How long does it take for edible size phesant from egg? Or are you just into the breeding or pet end of the birds?
Mongoose would be the biggest problem for all ground birds, and if they can get near your birds, the destruction will be complete/no survivors!
I'm interested in the guinea's, they can take care of themselves, and are excellent watch animals! And they don't crow but they do lay eggs!

Thanks for the input all. Les, not to worry I would only be bringing in Phasianus colchicus mongolicus which is already present on the Big Island....granted they are all hybrids at this point with P.c. torquatus and P.c. versicolor. At any rate if I can find a supply of birds on the island, there's no need to import. One can only imagine what could happen if another species of Galliform was accidentally released and established itself...the Kalij have already caused quite a mess.

We had guineas and they were just too loud and crazy. Kept the whole yard in an uproar all the time. Now we just have chickens and things are a lot quieter. When we had the guinea we just had hens, now we have the hens plus two roosters and it is still quieter than when the guineas were here.
No ducks or duck eggs can be imported into Hawaii and you have to bring in eggs from certified places and they have to have a certificate attached to the shipping box. There's a whole website on it although I don't have the URL handy. Google Hawaii quarentine and you should find something. If they aren't chicken eggs or day old chicks, then the eggs have to go through inspection in Honolulu, I think. The best thing would be to find someone over here who already has the type of birds you want and get some birds or eggs from them.

I just read a slightly dated overview of Kalij, calling them a highly sucessful release in the Islands!!
The only Galiform in quantity I know is the Frankin (at least Oahu&BI), but I haven't heard any negative or damage reports because of either!
