All tomatoes and no bugs - Kahunascott - 04-25-2008
We just picked our first crop of tomatoes (6) all around the size of a baseball and no bugs. I bought started plants with flowers on them already and poof we ate some of them last night. They tasted better than the ones from the Farmers Market, but I might be a bit bias, eh.
I sprayed them once a week with an organic pest spray I bought at the Garden exchange and it seemed to work. We live in Hawaiian Beaches at the 150 elevation level and about ¾ of a mile from the ocean.
I don’t know if this matters but we don’t have any, not one, mosquito either??????[
]We are growing herbs and peppers also. I can’t wait for Jayne to stuff a couple of those buggers and stick them in a nice pot of Italian tomato sauce. [:0]

Here's the stuff, let me know how organic it is cuz' I do know?
GARDEN SAFE
Fruit and vegetable insect sprayInsecticide from plants for plants
.08% Pyethrins
1.0% Canola oil
98% Inert
It was sold to me as organic and safe.
$8 for a 24 oz spray bottle and it lasted about a month for the entire garden.
Lets see that's about $12 a lbs for my tomatoes.

mahalo.
yesterday, i tried a mixture of neem oil, dish soap and water to kill some bugs on a plumeria tree, banana tree and puakenikeni tree. white fly i can identify, but the little orange ones on the plumeria? i have dogs around so wanted to try something safe, natural/organic.

2nd crop of tomatoes and still no worms or bugs?
I'm still using that stuff from garden exchange.
My plants have budded again. And are starting to produec another crop. In New York it's tomatoes in August and dead plants in Sept.
Since the're a vine do you know if the crops will be on going?

Scott, we have volunteer "weed" cherry tomatoes all around our lot... They seem to last a couple of years, with many fruiting episodes (usually have gaps during drought/flood times). These smaller tomatoes are not bothered by much (the ones by our fences get Roundupped by the neighbors gardener every once in a while, but they are also VERY acidic.... good for cooking, & sliced in a salad, but a little harsh for out-of-hand eating.
