I need to pep up our living space and was thinking plants would be a great way to do so. Any recommendations? We're up at 3000' or so so it never gets very hot at all. Plus due to the orientation of the house, the sun (I hear that it does exist up here but I'm beginning to have doubts) doesn't come in until the late afternoon. So basically I'm thinking shade-friendly plants would be the way to go. Also low-maintenance and longevity are preferred. I'm good at the watering part but just don't want to have to do a lot of feeding and such. I'd like some kind of palm but am very open to ideas. What works for you?

Color, lighting and artwork.....plant outside and make sure you can see your plants from inside!

Some airplane plants would help clean up the air, and they do well in hanging baskets and don't require awhole lot.

When your houseplants aren't doing so well inside, put them outside until they perk up and then rotate them back inside. I do that with orchids. When they bloom I bring them inside and when they stop blooming the go back out into the yard until they flower again.
About the only true "houseplants" we have are African violets, the rest of them spend time in the yard.

anthuriums do very well inside in pots and very tropical feel. and as holzcatz says you can rotate them in out... mother in law tongue also comes to mind in low lite is so easy you forget its alive...

Use the hot water treatment method (not for orchids or bromeliads though). 120 degree water, 15 minutes, should drive out just about anything (kills coquis for example). I'd probably fill a tub up to the height of the pot with the hot water, set the pot in it and let it sit. Follow it with a couple of minutes of cool water, and you'd probably be fine.
