Grapes - JayJay - 05-22-2008 I'm looking for a grape which will actually produce at 900 ft. Does anyone know of a source locally? JayJay RE: Grapes - Hotzcatz - 05-25-2008 Hey, Jayjay! Nobody seems to be helping you much with your search for a grape vine. If you wouldn't mind a seeded Concord type grape, you can come take a cutting from my grape vine or get a few seeds since some of the grapes are ripe now. It is a dark purple very "grape" flavored grape would make really good jam and jelly. It is seeded though so it may not be the best as a table grape but maybe some folks don't mind seeds in their grapes. I got the original vine as a cutting from an abandoned cane camp garden and folks tell me it is a "Filipino Wine Grape". It is producing grapes at about 400 foot elevation and was doing really well this year until the chickens ate all the grapes low enough for them to reach. RE: Grapes - JayJay - 05-26-2008 Mahalo Hotzcatz, Gee a cutting would be great. And if you need one I have Ulu (Samoan) great strain in one-gal pots and Samoan Spinach, very large dark green leaf. Perhaps we could do this this fall when it cools down? JayJay RE: Grapes - Hotzcatz - 05-27-2008 For an ulu I could start a couple cuttings or seeds for you! My friend has been wanting an ulu in the worst way and she could grow it in her backyard since I don't have much room in my yard. This grape vine would probably come true from seed, but I'm not certain of that. It was started from a cutting so another cutting would be the most certain way to get more of it. I have planted several other varieties of grapes in other places of the yard but they haven't been there long enough to produce grapes. The producing vine is about five years old and has been pruned back twice. Two years ago a friend from Napa came by and she helped prune it back which was a more drastic pruning than I would have done. The year after that it didn't have overly much fruit on it but this year it had loads until the chickens got about half the crop. I should either encourage the vine to grow higher (which makes picking the grapes harder) or fence the chickens out or plant enough grapes for everyone. RE: Grapes - Kahunascott - 05-27-2008 Jayjay ask Carey we just gave her two that my wife bought local don 't ask me what dekine I'm into tomatoes and I'm having a bumper crop. So many that I'm having trouble strapping them to the poles the're so heavy "Many dreams come true and some have silver linings, I look for my dreams and a pocket full of gold" Led Zeppelin RE: Grapes - Carey - 05-27-2008 Hey, I just put them in the ground...What do I know???? Anyhoo, S&J gave me a thompson seedless & a flame (I figured it was for the Vulcans school colors - red & white) They have been in the ground less than a week ago and they still look good... this is my first time with grapes.... so.... ( I have very little experience with most fruiting things, as the last place I lived was one acre of mixed oaks with a few japenese maples thrown in - well over 30 trees.... know a lot about acorns, squirrels & wild turkeys from that place, but little else grew... did grow ~ 30 japanese maples a year from seedlings for friends, but that was it...) RE: Grapes - JayJay - 05-27-2008 The Thompson is the grape if you can get it happy. I grew up in the desert of Cali and we had two one-hundred foot rows of both Thompson and Concord fed entirely from chicken droppings. A bumper crop each year. These grapes like sun and heat like tomatoes. I've tried the 'Flame' but with no results but always looking for a grape which will actually produce here in Black Sands Sub Division at circa 900 feet and buggy as hell. I'm not able to drive but if you can work out the logistics catz I have the Samoans in various sizes in pots and ready to go, although, since they're such a delicate plant, I do recommend they not be put in the ground until the cool weather returns. Remember the story of Captain Bligh and the 'Mutany On the Bounty'? It was all due to the plant's inability to be effectively taken as a cutting or root cutting. JayJay RE: Grapes - Hotzcatz - 05-28-2008 Going to Black Sands to secure a Samoan Ulu seedling sounds like a garden club excursion to me! Fortunately our garden club is rather small, basically we have two full time members, the Queen and me. I get to be the "Head Composter". Ha! I'll see if the Queen of our Garden Society (we used to be a Garden Club, but that sounded too violent) wants to go holoholo. Her car gets really good gas mileage so we wander around in her car. She used to be President of our garden club but that sounded way too political, we don't discuss politics much so she was nominated Queen instead. email me at hotzcatz(at)yahoo.com to discuss schedules and such if you'd like. We could bring fresh cuttings as well as some seeds so you could work with both. One or the other should take, I would think. RE: Grapes - Carey - 05-31-2008 I have new leaves! (OK, not earth shattering... but hey, these are my very first grape vines, and I have new leaves!) (Maybe I will be a vinter when I grow up!) (How many bottles with 2 vines?) RE: Grapes - Scott_S - 06-02-2008 I have a Thompson that has been planted about 3 months now, seems to be doing ok. It getting to be about 2 or 3 feet tall and the same around. It doesn't seem to vine like some of the other types I have had. Scott |
