Name that Plant! - Carey - 05-25-2008
I just uncovered a couple of plants on our lot while evicting a guava tree stump ..... and we have a few others that we have been trying to ID... anyone have any ideas what they are???

hi carey,
from the pics i'm guessing the clustered orange/red shrub looks like a jatropha type which can be a shrub or smaller tree...the last picture with the orange red with butterfly type stamens looks like a member of the clerodendrun family, maybe clerodendrun bungii, or one of the 4-5 types...not sure about the palm, i'm guessing a rhapsis? i love the variegated yellow shrub with the purple flower, would love to propogate one of those, can you stick a cutting in the ground for me?
we will be moving out there by mid june timeframe...weeee!

The one that you call "bush" (salmon colored) is so common - I see it everywhere. My Hawaiian friend showed me that when they were girls they used to take the flower and gently pull out the stamen and there's one little drop of dew at the end...they put it on their tongues - it's sweet like honey!

Noel, Thanks for the info.... I already put yellow leaf trimmings in planting bags, so hopefully some will root....

I have a green leaved version of #1, it was sold to me as "Chinese violetbush". It's easy to start, even the fallen leaves will sprout. #2 looks like Alexander or King palm, it will get big. Never seen #3. #5 is Ixora. #6 Is Clerodendron "Bleedingheart Glorybower".

Hi Carey,
#1 looks like one of the Caricature Plants to me (Graptophyllum pictum)
They grow easily from semi-hardwood cuttings and can make a nice hedge or med-large shrub.
#3 is probably Mussaenda "Dona Luz" - http://admin.uplb.edu.ph/photos.php?a=1&i=4&s=
Can't say for sure about the palm - but I don't think its Raphis
I also think # 5 and 6 are Ixora and Clerodendron

THAT's IT! You guys are great! Thank you all for the info (Mitzi, you are amazing, I had gotten the Dona Luz down to something in the coffee family.... & knew it was probably Fillipino, as many neighbors told me it was, what I thought, 'donia dulce'.... hard to search if you are spelling it completely wrong!
Anyhoo.... It seems most of these plants are easy to propagate, so anyone that wants cuttings..... (and others... chenille plant, ti's crotons, cassava, hibiscus, .... and others... )... stop on by, any time (of course easier if we are home....)

oops, i stand corrected on the ixora is the correct shrub, thats what i was thinking of and i said jatropha....this is such a nice shrub to trim and turn into a more formed shrub....nice to know what the name of the variegated plant finally.

OK, I got another plant, our neighbor showed us while on a walk.. it has small purple blue berries juicy with small whitish seeds
