Local Watermelons - Carolann R - 05-31-2008

We've been up to our ears in Watermelon lately and lovin' it. Anyone had any luck growing them? I am buying the locally grown ones, so it must be easy enough to get them going...anyone?

I'm trying in Orchidland. The sugar babys are doing the best. I think its too dry despite putting them in soil. They should be doing much better by now. Hot peppers on the other hard are thick. I have some nice long red thai cayenne that are guaranteed to bring tears to your eyes.

Sugar babies are a variety of watermelon like black diamond, rattlesnake, moon and stars, etc. They are a mid sized refrigerator melon that usually do well. They may need more heat here though.[Smile]

I went ahead and started a few of the seeds I had in a tray...we'll see how they do here. Still don't have our little planting area set up, but I'm collecting things little by little.

Hi Carolynn,

I am growing a watermelon. I am in HPP. I grew one last year. It didn't get really big but it was tasty. Mine right now is a little bit small than a soccer ball. It has been really dry I should probably be watering it but it seems to be doing well.

I wonder if a black plastic mulch under the melons would help heat them up?

RE: Local Watermelons - Carey - 06-02-2008

some of our OLDER neighbors in Keaau town use old tin roofing under their vine plants, inc. watermelon... seems to keep them buggsies & other uck off the melons & such. a newer neighbors has vine arbors all about (Carrie, look to be bamboo...), and they also have wonderful vine crops.... they gave us a nice pumpkin yesterday!

I love it...

Watermelons can yield some of the same effects as Viagra! [:o)]

These of course arn't local but I've got 'Thai Baby Watermelons' started and a new one caled 'The Green Machine' plus another from Persia called 'Ali Baba.' What I'm doing is looking for a watermelon which does really well in Puna at 900 ft.
