Mangosteen - hpp4me - 06-20-2008
I just had my first mangosteen, bought at a California asian food store. It is hard to get on the mainland.
Deliciious! Maybe even the best fruit I've ever had!
Does manosteen grow well on the Big Island? If so, at what elevation? Anyone have luck growing it?

I have two mangoosteen trees. I'm on 5th in Hpp. They are doing well but need shade and will not tolerate direct sunlight. I bought them at Plant it Hawaii. It takes a while to have fruits ,about 10 years.

Mangosteen: delicious and the tree takes a l-o-n-g time to mature.

these seem to be very fussy trees and want great conditions to fruit and it does take a long time for them to develop....why not try rambutans or lychees?

Here's a secret - when in season, drop by the botanical garden off of Kawili & Kilauea in Hilo and they will let you pick mangosteen fruits from their trees, just stop by the front desk and ask. They have a clump of about 5-7 trees. Also you can order tree saplings from them.

We will have those, too. To me the taste of mangosteen is very different from rambutans and lychees, so I really don't see those as alternatives. We have an acre, so there should be room for all of them!
