Any one tried to make wine from Hawaii fruit? If so what fruit and was it ok - fair - good - great? If it was great how did you make it ?

Yes it is legal to make wine. I don't know how much you are allowed to make but but it is enough to keep you drunk most of the year! If you are brewing beer you can legally make up to 200 gallons a year. You can't sell it or barter it but you can give it too friends. The one thing you would have to do here is keep the new wine or beer in a cooler part of the house while fermenting. You can get some undesirable flavors if it works out too fast.
You can also make wine from most any fruit or herb. I've even tasted dandelion wine years ago!
You have to be careful when making wine as you can produce something that can harm you. With beer on the other hand when you make it you can make something that taste nasty but won't hurt you!

The kids (all the over 21 year olds) are makign beer right now with the ingredients and materials from the beer store in Hilo. So far they are 1 week and 5 gals of beer into it! They want to make wine too and are researching wine making recipes. They made a batch last year of mango beer. Put it in corona bottles and stored in the dark coolest part of the house. It was a little "young" as they started 3 weeks before they had to leave last year but was worthy of a taste or two.

OK, I'll have to admit we made a less-than-successful attempt at Lime wine last fall. Friend has a lime orchard, and gave us the limes. Got supplies from online and the beer/wine making store in Hilo. It never started fermenting properly, probably because the PH was way off. What came out at the end could perhaps be called "drinkable", if you're very tolerant or very thirsty. We had found a recipe online for citrus wine and followed that.
We used to make all kinds of berry wine back when we lived in the Northwest, of which the best were blackberry, raspberry and strawberry. All were fermented out to be very dry, and excellent!
I have heard that jaboticaba makes good wine, and know that Volcano Winery uses guava, so maybe going that route would work better than the limes!

It has been several years since Cathie and I did any brewing but we did bring all the equipment with us. If I ever get the shop finished we may just have to get a batch cooked up.[:p] We quit using bottles and went to the 5 gal. soda kegs and charge them with co2 rather than letting them "work" in the bottles. Get a clearer beer that way.[

Interesting information-the beer/wine making equipment store in Hilo.
Just curious - does the final product (beer) taste as good as commercial products? Close enough? Or even better?.
Probably,not.Otherwise beer companies would be out of business..

Actually, with a little experience and experimentation, the final product is superior to commercial products and the alcohol content is usually higher. You become your own micro-brewery.[
