Can You Make Zucchini Climb? - Carolann R - 07-18-2008

I have some young, very hearty zucchini starts from seeds we bought...they look real happy - I was wondering if anyone knew if I could trellis them on Hog Wire? I trellised the cucumbers and they are doing very well (taste great too). I figured if I just weave them I could train the chutes to trellis...

I,ve trained that weed, zucchini, to climb chain link, hog wire should be no problem. Then you can supply you and 500 of your closest friends with zucchini, not my favorite, but different strokes etc.[Big Grin]

My mom's zucchinis used to get ahead of her by the end of the summer every year and turn into the mutant zucchinis that ate Indiana. I remember her leaving them on neighbors' and friends' doorsteps like foundling babies. One year the ladies she gardens with had a potluck where the only rule was everything had to have zucchini in it. Zucchini cake is better than you would think, although it is an odd colour. If you cut the monster ones in half and give them to your chickens they will be happy chickens.

I have seen them successfully trained to grow on fences if they are a vining variety, although I prefer the bush varieties because they tend to stay put instead of racing for the other end of the garden.

I'm not sure what variety mine are...bush or vine...I'll have to check, but I must say they are raring to grow!!

Zucchini bread is awesome! It's a lot like banana bread in texture.

Zucchinis are wonderful, prolific vegies. And there are so many ways to use them! Zucchini is good in soups, stuffed & baked, sliced & topped with cheese & garlic, steamed, grated raw into salads, grated & cooked into breads, muffins & cakes. Chocolate-zucchini cake is delicious!

Unfortunately for me, my seedlings all disappeared within a couple nights - very disappointing - and I am now zucchini-less.
Keep this in mind, all you who will soon have too many!

You can have all you want once we start harvesting, Liz!

We eat a lot of it...usually in stir-fry and I always put it in my spaghetti sauce.

Awesome, Carrie! Just let me know when it's time to come & help with the excess ;-)

Okay, some (Dick) may think I'm crazy but zucchini really is one of my favorites :-)
And when I get 'too much', I use my mother-in-law's unwritten recipe to make pickle relish with it. Tasty!

Carrie - we tried letting the squash climb - it did okay for awhile - climbed all the way onto the deck (11')- then it couldnt push water up through it anymore and all the vines climbing died **Poof** - all the ones on the ground are thriving still.

Liz, I would never presume to think you're crazy for liking zucchini, I just have gone the use it in everything route to often. I happily give almost all I grow away. Eat the nice slender new squash and make a little bread. After that it's who wants zucchini...PPPPPPPPPPPPlease.[Big Grin]
