Veterinary Help - macuu222 - 05-25-2006

I live in HPP and have three pets and would like to take them to a good veterinarian for yearly checkups and emergencies when and if they happen.

I noticed we have a vet clinic ( Big Island Pet Care Center) in HPP on 28th and Kaloli. I drive by there every day and always see the sign saying open..... and I like the idea of a vet clinic very close to home.....but I never see any customers parked outside.

Has anyone used this vet? Any comments about them would be appreciated!!!

I havent used them but I do go to Dr. Seska in Keaau. She fixed Kitty when she got hit by a motorcycle during Christmas. She said pay the bill as you get money... (at that time i thought it was going to be really high - turned out she only billed $250 for 2 days stay, surgery, anitbiotics, pain pills. Not bad at all!) And Kitty actually goes to Dr. Seska arms willingly. Kitty doesnt freak out!

We always go to Big Island Pet Care. Dr. Grune and his staff have always done a great job caring for our dogs and cats. Also, if you're waiting for exams or procedures, you can walk across the street to Rozette's nursery and browse while you wait.

I can recommend them. Our three have each been for various things. Good care, straight talk, affordable, no nonsense.

we go to them too and I'm happy there. I have one friend who complained about them. Their dog had been poisoned and the vet didn't recognize the symptoms and the dog died. So she said that he's good for routine care, but not to go to him for emergencies. And since we haven't had any emergencies, I can't support or deny that claim.

I go to them for the convenience too.

BTW; If a vet. opened a clinic in Pahoa, I'd switch to it in an instant, having lost 2 dogs at different times because it was just too far.....

Leilaniguy,

I would highly recommend that you look into getting the Dog owner's or (one for cat, also)home veterinary care book.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0876052014/002-0504543-6672035?v=glance&n=283155
It may save the life of one of your pets. Also if a pet is in shock or distress, call the vet you are going to ahead of time and tell them you are having a emergency that you will be bringing in describing the symptoms that they are displaying so they can get an IV set up or what you need. Also get some hydrogen peroxide if pets ingests something that it should not have, some Gas-X for tummmy upsets and activated charcoal if ate some poison. Or ask the vet for a list to have on hand since you are too far away to reach in some cases of emergency.
I think you will find that this book will save you countless times when you are wondering what to do for your pet.

Aloha,
Lucy

Mahalo for the tip Lucy. Last time I had an emergency was 4th of July 2002, my dog was poisoned, of course all I got were answering machines wishing me happy holiday. I finally got a Hilo vet. to open for a price, cost me $250 for her to pronounce my dog dead. Sorry for the bummer post.

Leilani guy,

Sorry that this happened to you and real sorry that you lost your beloved dog too, that is a heartbreaker.

Even with quick medical attention and knowing that a dog or cat swallowed something like antifreeze, they still cannot always save them. It can be too caustic for the system and burn out the stomach and intestinal tract. I hate to bring this up and don't want to upset you more.
I am sorry for your loss.

I would also suggest if someone knows of an off hours emergency clinic that they post the number and name of that clinic, since they are always needed and should have that number kept in a place where you will always remember to have handy in case of emergency. Or if a vet does have a phone contact for off hours emergency calls.

I have had to visit them on several occasions here myself and they have been a great service to have.

The book that I mentioned has saved me countless other visits to a vet and I used to work for one (many moons ago in avian/exotics anesthesia).

You are welcome for the suggestions, I just wish you had a better outcome than you did. I too lost a favorite dog at age 4 to an auto-immune disease in 2003 after spending 4 grand and something. It hurts and I miss her so. I am caring for her daughter now and her two week old (today) puppies. They have just opened their eyes but can't hear real well yet, nor really see too well either, but it is fun watching their developement. (Even though it means seeing them at all hours of the night so they all thrive!) I did just lose two young macaws in the last few weeks that I am deeply mourning. Don't know how long it will take me to get over this. Pets bring so much joy to us but parting with them is so hard.

All the best,
Lucy

RE: Veterinary Help - Mitzi M - 07-09-2006

This thread has been really helpful as I'm looking for a vet as well. A long time back I worked as a vet tech and I know that there are very specific remedies for particular poisons so, of course, getting your poisoned pet to a vet asap is important. But, by far, the most common and fast-acting pet poison is antifreeze. Symptoms usually occur 30 minutes to 12 hours after ingestion. A very small amount can be fatal. If you suspect your pet has ingested antifreeze (the symptoms include sudden drunkenness, staggering, vomiting and foaming at the mouth) give them regular 3% over the counter hydrogen peroxide at a rate of 1-2 teaspoons per ten lbs of body weight. If you do not have a syringe, use a turkey baster or a plastic bag with a small hole cut in it to get it down their throats. This will cause vomiting and may save your pet, however, you should head to the vet regardless as you will probably need more help. The two other leading causes of poisoning are rat poison and slug bait. Buy pet safe slug bait and look to other options besides rat poison. It also kills our native hawks and owls.
