Today's Rally for the Plan!! was a success and fun morning. Approximately fifty+ FoPF folks and others gathered for a sign waving rally at the council building prior to the critical Committee on Planning meeting. There was TV coverage, I do not know what stations , and tomorrows paper will likely headline the following NEWS.
PCDP passes critical vote!
The vote was 5/4 in favor of Pass It Now / Amend It Later.
When a number of 5/4 votes made it obvious where it was going the Hilo section of the council threw in the towel and it ended with a 9/0 approval.
We all are thrilled that a hard month's effort has paid off. We can say that we won....and in that moment know that some history was made today and FoPF played a meaningful role.
For the first time in Hawaiian history a community derived development plan is heading to a council for passage and we are confident of the votes.
I am proud of the work of FoPF and feel we deserve to celebrate a little. There is, of course, much more to do on this subject to get the PCDP through council and then enter the amendment process.
I am also proud that we have five council members that can think outside their districts and work for the island as a whole. Do not be shy about taking a moment and thanking these council members for their support and service.

I believe that what we participated in and spearheaded is a cultural shift on the Big Island. I might describe it as a nail in the coffin of the Old Plantation Ways when people were afraid to speak up and the large landowners made all the decisions....
We did answer the original question on which FoPF was formed: Can Puna Have More Clout?

I am so proud of our community effort to get this passed! I wish I could have been there at the rally, but I did send emails to several Council members letting them know my opinion. I find it really sad that OUR Councilwoman could not bring herself to vote for this until the matter was settled by others.

It was great to see so many people there today! As a latecomer in the process, I say thank you to everyone who worked so long and hard on the CDP and on organizing the rally for the plan as well. Today it felt to me like regular people can make a difference.
Humongous thanks to our council members who spent a long day listening to our community and voted in support of the plan.
I am confident that Puna is better off because of this plan.

Definitely a day to be proud of.
Listening to the sincerely heartfelt and very intelligent testimony today was a blessed inspiration.
..."hey, those guys and gals are my neighbors! Aren't they somethin'!"
Tonight, the world knows a few more things about 'New' Puna: we care, we vote, we speak up, we expect to be heard, and we can even string sentences together intelligently! ...look out world!
There's much work to be done.
We can take strength in knowing we are able to do whatever work is required so that we can do it our way!

Way Awesome!!! Pete and I have been watching, and sending in written testimony, and are delighted to see such response! Kudos to Rob and the "acitivist" within all of us who speak out on all sides of an issue.
