Art is.. - Guest - 04-13-2014 I was told that Art is the expression of oneself. Its been said that Volcano has a pretty solid art community. Anyone on here an artist of any sort ? I've been a musician for almost 20 years. I started painting about 5 years ago, and most recently I took up photography about 2 years ago. What is your outlet, and how does it relate to Puna lifestyle for you ? (I'd post a link to my website but I fear Bullwinkle might think its a conspiracy - grin)[] RE: Art is.. - bgiles - 04-13-2014 Thank you. I play 12-string. Photographer since Navy photo school in 1967. Writer; my first book published on Kindle The Clothing Optional Beaches of Adak Island ALASKA actually begins and ends in Puna. Friends say it's not too cheesy and definitely worth $2.99. I have two other finished novels that are awaiting cover art: Two Hundred Thousand and Changewhich is, in short, a D.B. Cooper novel--(I was an active jumper at the time in the Pacific Northwest) and Allegiance...the protagonist is a Korean (Koryon) shepherd boy who is "drafted" by the Mongols and takes part in both Mongol invasions of Japan. I'm very pleased with these works which have taken up weekends and odd moments for years since my 1976 SDSU English degree. Gardening is an art, architecture is an art, cooking is an art...Puna is fertile ground for art. bamboo2u RE: Art is.. - Derrick Barnicoat - 04-13-2014 I do new media art, video art, interactive video art, video installations, sculpture, music, performance art, painting, drawing and I pretty much try to get into any medium I am inspired to get into. I went to The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and studied painting and video art. I also studied new media art at Parsons. I don't live in Puna yet but I will be moving in the next year or so. I always think if art is your forte it happens wherever you are. I have heard there are lots of artists in Puna and I have met a few who were really interesting. I haven't met any who do anything similar to what I do but I guess that is a good thing. RE: Art is.. - DTisme - 04-13-2014 I find the local art world very welcoming, and there is much to do here art-wise. The monthly First Friday art event in Hilo is a must, as are shows at Wailoa Center, Volcano Art Center, and EHCC. As long as we're all self-promoting... After 30 years as a graphic designer, I became an illustrator, writer, and watercolorist. I also dabble in paper-based jewelry and painted boxes. I sell through One Gallery in Hilo, Volcano Garden Arts in Volcano, and at the annual Paradise Studio Tours. Currently, I'm in the throes of contract negotiations for a middle-grade fantasy, but also published a scifi humor novel. I also belong to a group called Puna TAG (Traveling Art Group). We meet once a month -- today in fact! -- to work on whatever we're working on and talk story about the local art scene. There's a group that meets Thursday mornings at the warm ponds. And there's a plein air group, too, that I believe goes out once a week. Oh, and there's HINA - Hawaii Island Network of Artists, a free group to join for artists started by VAC. In my watercolors, I concentrate on island images: http://dsthornton.artistwebsites.com/ The scifi book is here: http://www.amazon.com/Marvin-Plotnik-Hilltop-Wayward-Juveniles/dp/0615653901/ (I also have signed copies, natch. $10. Cheap.) FB: https://www.facebook.com/DSThorntonIllustwriter Twitter: https://twitter.com/D_S_Thornton Derrick, sounds like you will fit right in. Links to everyone's work appreciated! RE: Art is.. - Derrick Barnicoat - 04-13-2014 My website is www.newhumandreamtimeintl.com. There is more to be added but I slack on updating it. RE: Art is.. - Guest - 04-13-2014 Derrick, That link leads me elsewhere... maybe repost it ? Diane, I love your Hula Water Colors... How hard is it to get your books on Kindle ? If interested some of my photography and early paintings are here - www.awakeoneself.com RE: Art is.. - Derrick Barnicoat - 04-14-2014 I don't know why it didn't work. I tried it just now and it didn't work. Then I retyped it and it works, bizarre. maybe because the first time I copy and pasted but there no difference…IDK www.newhumandreamtimeintl.com RE: Art is.. - Guest - 04-14-2014 Nice work Derrick... do you do a lot of field recording for your sounds? I always wanted to incorporate more field recordings into my music.... RE: Art is.. - Carey - 04-14-2014 Derrick, the first link has a period hyperlinked in (sometimes cut & paste do that if you are copying from something that put a period at the end...) RE: Art is.. - dakine - 04-14-2014 quote:yep any ol period at the end will do your url in photographer.. thirty years on kilauea... old website.. sort of embarrassing but what the... http://volcanophoto.com |
