Cat Deterrent? - Rumi in Hawaii - 10-28-2008

We've recently had a feral cat using the gravel under the house as a litter box...stinky, to say the least. Other than a dog, or moth balls, does anyone have a suggestion of a substance that will deter a cat from an area? Sure would appreciate some advice....

It's expensive, but Urine Gone works very well and doesn't stink.

We had a "decorative" sand box behind the house which attracted every cat - feral and loose pet - in Hawaiian Beaches (and some from Hawaiian Shores!).

Spray every few days and they don't come back.

Not sure how big the area is, I have used chicken wire or deer netting laid it flat to cover certain ground areas, stops the animals, chickens from scratching or digging.

Catch it in a live animal trap and relocate it to the humane society.

My suggestion is a 22 long rifle, end of problem. Well, now that I have said that, it’s probably much better to go to the animal shelter and get a cat trap, bait it with a can of tasty vitals [$1.29 a can]. A long rifle projectile only cost a dime. Before you start beating me like a rented mule I’m only kidding.

Nuke the cat, he’s probably gay anyway if he spreads his crap where he ain’t wanted.

Ace Hardware carries dog/cat repellent granules that have worked very well for me.

use it up, wear it out, make it do, do without

Yep, a .22 is the best way to go. It is by far the most humane and effective.

Releasing a non-native predator to another location is not doing anyone any favors, especially the native prey.

If you relocate it, you are just taking the cowards way out. A man has to step up and do what is right, even though it ain't pretty.

I was stranded on Kahoolawe for a month. There are only 3 species to speak of on the island, mice, cats, and goats.

The relationship between the mice and cats is strange. The cats will over populate and eat all the mice but a few. Then the cats all starve but a few then the mice take back over and re-over-populate. over and over.
When I was there, you had to sleep in a hammock or the mice would chew on your ears and finger tips. You had to tap your feet when you were eating or they'd climb your legs. the whole island was covered, like 1 or 2 per sq ft.

There is an old saying, "If you can't shoot your dog or shoe your horse, you shouldn't have either!"

Feral cats usually do not come close to people or houses, the fact that the cat is using the gravel under the house, suggests the cat was originally a pet that was abandoned. The kindest thing for any animal that is starving or unwanted is to trap the animal, take it to the Inhumane society, where they will put the animal down for you! This comment is for anyone who has stray cats on their property and is tolerant of them, there are advantages to having a cat around, if you treat it humanely and give it food and water (later spay or neuter) they will repay you by keeping mice and rats under control, killing centipedes, cockroaches and other pests.

A dog can work pretty good too.
