Hawaiian Alarm Clock - Rob Tucker - 11-02-2008

Boy-o-boy.

Had a couple transient hunting dogs corner and grab a pig outside our bedroom window early this morning. Talk about a rude awakening. What was interesting was the dogs weren't making a sound, not a grrr or a growl. The pig was raising holy hell though.

Good morning.

Our "alarm" went off way too early this morning: the neighbors screaming, cussing, slamming car doors, peeling out with the car horn blaring. Woke up the entire household, including our guests who have a little 1-year-old. :-P

Rob,
All you need is some salt, pepper, red pepper flakes and some sage to go with that alarm clock.

I'm pretty sure I kind of know where you live... and I'm amazed a pig would venture that close into town! They are getting more brave!

I've got a neighborhood rooster that is our "Hawaiian Alarm Clock"

I live in Keaukaha and we see pigs in people's front yards along Kalanianaole at all hours of the day. Saw a sow with a big batch of piglets just past Four Mile at 3:30 in the afternoon yesterday rooting under the neighbors' avacados. I assume they come over from the Homelands between here and the airport, but they have no fear of people and little fear of most dogs.

We had a history walk today, conducted by an 88 yo neighbor. The subject of pigs came up and he stated that years ago pigs were rarely seen down from the mountain and the hunters had to go way up to hunt them. Today, the pigs have a greater population and boldness to come down into people populated areas.

That source of free meat is a god send.

There used to be a lot more hunters around when the population was more local. Since the mill closing and the PC against it, a lot less hunters are active. It's happening nation wide, some places you can't shoot em if they're eating your garden.

This is a beautiful urban myth. Got a valid source for this fabrication?

Meanwhile, back in Puna...
Our land about one mile across the Pahoa bypass from Rob's house is over run with pigs and at least 4 different hunters take pigs there. Our problem is they do not take enough of 'em!
No hunting allowed on Bishop Estate/Kamehameha Schools land that adjoins us.
Lots of hunters, islanders by birth and by choice. Lots more pigs.
Now, if we could get the new Burger King to serve up local pig meat, we'd be taking down the food miles! Smile

What is "the PC"?

We have plenty of hunters about as far as I know. The dogs that cornered the pig at my house in the morning were hunting dogs. In my experience it is lack of rainfall that drives the pigs into town areas mostly. They go searching farther and wider for sources of water. Pigs do breed rather rapidly too.

For my part I wasn't complaining about a pig being caught. It was just a rather noisy way to wake up. LAst time it happened at my house a young local boy, about 12, had run down a pig on my property and killed it hand to hand with a knife. I asked him what he was going to do with that pig. He answered: "I'm gonna eat 'em". I had to shake his hand. Mano a mano is truly hunting. Not some chicken s**t guy in camo with a high powered rifle and telescope.
