The area is opened again today (friday). With the absence of strong tradewinds, however, it is subject to closure at short notice. Enjoy!

Thanks and keep these updates comin' guys. We have out of town guests coming for Thanksgiving and lava viewing is high on their list of things not to be missed.

From the county newsletter:
"The lava hotline phone number is 961-8093, which lets you know the lava viewing hours for the day ahead. The lava hotline automated message is updated every day at 10 a.m."
It only tells you if it's open or not, and what the hours are.

The Ocean entry viewing last night (Sun 11/23) was great! The new bench has moved out from behind the little point that obscures the view. Good viewing should continue until the new bench collapses again.

We were there on Thursday, and it was indeed a bit obscured by a headland. But Saturn and Venus made up for that!
Once again I encountered people who either had no flashlight or one between two or three of them. Don't do it people, one flashlight each, makes it much more enjoyable and less dangerous traversing the lava.
