U-Pick fruits ? - Naomi W - 06-21-2006

I went and u-picked cherries yesterday, and raspberries this morning just to eat. Tomorrow I will pick more raspberries for jelly.
Are there any u-pick fruits places on the island?

What are some of the fruits on the island to make into jelly?

Thanks you guys for all the great information!!!

I'm not sure if there are any farms where you can go in and pick and pay for what you want.

However:

There are plenty of spots where there are "Wild" unattended trees/shrubs where I have picked the following for free:
coconuts, mangos, papaya, avocados, guava, cherry guava, raspberries, ohelo berries, tomatoes, fish (not on trees though).

Aloha
Andrew

Thanks, Andrew I am sure you just eat them, but do you ever make jam or jelly with the fruit. Just curious.

If we do make it to the island to live I am with Pam I want a map to. hehehe Smile
thanks Naomi

Naomi:

The goods don't usually last long enough to make it to the pot. However I would like to learn how to preserve some of the stuff. I had a wild guava jelly once that somebody made and it was great. During guava season there are so many guava trees in various spots that if you wanted you could scoop up plenty and make enough jelly to start your own cottage industry. Hey maybe I'm on to something. Guava season - gas stove, jars, Puna market - say wouldn't that be cool.

Mahalos,
Andrew

Okay, so you deliver right?

Let me place my order for a dozen of everything you find and starter trees for each too... 8 of each tree should be enough. Shall I expect you Saturday? Hehehe

Aloha all,
My favorite island jam is poha berry. If I remember correctly, they can be found at higher altitudes like on the Saddle Road; my uncle grows them in Ocean View. Here's a recipe from the Honolulu paper, good as a glaze on pork, leave out the pepper if you want it for toast.
Poha Berry Jam
1 cup Poha berries
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon minced ginger
1 pinch crushed red pepper
Combine berries, sugar, water, minced ginger and a pinch of red peppers. Cook until liquid forms a syrup. Keep at room temperature until ready to serve.

Or thicken with pectin, pour into jars, and seal with wax. I do this here in Steamboat with serviceberries and chokecherries if I beat the bears to 'em.

Here's a link with a picture of the poha berry:
