Insulation? - Cindy Blankenship - 12-07-2008

Has anyone here had insulation installed? We're renting (HPP) but would pay for insulation in the attic area above the computer room/son's b.r. and in the two outside walls of that room if affordable...or perhaps just above and then shade outside the walls (vinyl siding and dry wall). We can't install it ourselves. I've heard that just insulating above one room can make a difference. The brand new 8,000 btu a/c doesn't keep the room at an even temperature and I suspect the problem is the lack of insulation and shade.

Thanks!

Cindy

Ventilate the attic space as well as insulate. Find ways to let the hot air out.

Is your roof white or a light color? A light colored roof will keep a lot of the heat out. Painting the roof white will lower the temperature of the roof by a huge amount. Take a piece of roofing the color of your roof, paint half of it white and set it out in the sun for a bit then put your hand on each half.

The roof eaves should be nice and wide to shade the walls of the house. Three feet wide is usually considered "normal" for eaves in Hawaii. Otherwise, perhaps planting Chinese banana plants will create some shade on the side of the house as well as tasty bananas, too.

Thanks! I'll email Jay about the attic, and I love the Chinese banana plants idea. Roof is sky blue, and the house/eaves a very light cream. There's a small window in the attic where fan could blow out hot air if outlet up there.

I don't know anything about building, but I find it interesting that the utility closet in between the computer room and the kitchen is always nice and cool. It shares the same uninsulated attic, but the only difference I know if is that it's insulated by it's dry wall construction.
