running/hiking trails - lydiaeden - 12-16-2008

i'm looking for some trails or roads that would be safe and fun to run on in puna and can't find any online info. are there any runners here who can point me in the right direction? i've been running here in orchidland and so far have been bitten by a dog, saddened by the dumping everywhere, and a little scared that i would run too close to unfriendly humans.
also, anyone wanting a running/walking partner, i'm up for it!
thanks

Running through HPP is pretty safe. From the highway you could run down Paradise (4 miles), then along the shore on Beach (1 mile), followed by a run up Makuu (another 4 miles) and then 1 mile along the highway back to the start. Okay, there's traffic, but run against the flow and you'll be okay. Also, if there's traffic then that usually means no unflattened dogs.
You could shorten this run by taking any of the cross streets; I can't vouch for all of them but you'd be wise to carry some sort of anti-dog device just in case. Never had any problems so far. Enjoy!
