I saw a suspicious vehicle the other night on 33rd. A black jeep wrangler. It was parked in front of empty houses. Moved places a few times. It was 1:00 am. I heard that there are about 5 breakins a week recently in hpp. We need to catch these guys before we all go crazy.

This sort of thing happens all the time and has been on the increase lately. The HPP Neighborhood Watch meets the first Saturday of every month at the HPP Community Center and crime stats are presented by the Community Policing Officer. (Lamentably, Officer Briski has been promoted, but the new guy seems to be trying.) The stat report is very interesting because we are given a map where crimes of all sorts are shown. Burglaries seem to most often be concentrated in the area near the shoreline. Why? As Clyde Barrow (referring to banks) put it, "That's where the money is." Despite that geographic propensity, burglary and theft happen all over HPP.

We have a few more details on this. It appears that the intruders actually entered an occupied dwelling this time. That's a dangerous business for all concerned.
They reportedly will drive right up into a driveway, even if there are cars parked there, just to scope things out. They shout out. If they get a response, they act like they are at the wrong house and leave.
Where robberies are occuring people have reported seeing a white compact pickup in the area.
It's good to keep some distinctions in mind: 1) Burglary is entering a dwelling with the intent to commit a felony, therein --almost always larceny, 2) Robbery is taking something by force or fear.

My wife and I where at the HPP Neighborhood Watch meeting and at the close talked to one of the officers about the break-in. It was on Paradise Ala Kai - a vacation rental - occupied with people on vacation - the burglars MO is very similar to some Pahoa break-ins. They removed window panes from a jalousie window - entered stole, wallets, I.D'S and left without waking anyone - theft discovered the following morning!
I had never thought of jalousies as an easy entry - my naivate!

our kailua home had jalousies and were very easy to break into. i had to do it often when mom would lock me out on many occasions during her first years with alzheimer's. we switched to awning type windows and you can bet from that point on, i carried my keys at ALL times.

oh yeah, jalousie's are well known here and in the South Pacific for easy entry.
In fact they've had Crimestopper features on Oahu news about jalousies.
But I think if you close the jalousies it's OK. If they're open they can be slid out.
