Happy New Year All,
I was wondering where the public/free sources of water (fit for drinking?) are near Pahoa? I'm looking at buying a property where I wouldn't have rain catchment set up for a while.

There is a place just outside Pahoa on 130 in the direction of Hilo on the Makai side of the highway. (Across the road from a large green water tank.) It is safely off the highway and has multiple bays for pulling your vehicle up to the public faucets.

Happy new year back to you. There are public taps at Keonopukunui a few hundred feet past the new fire station and at the triangle of rt. 130 and 137 at Kalapana.

When we used to live off the water grid (is that the term for County water?) we always liked getting water at Wiohinu down near Pahala when ever we went that way since IMHO they have the tastiest water around.
There is public water available up near the park in Kurtistown, too.

There are also a some water tap areas in Keaau, 2 on the mauka side of the Highway & the Makai one is at the Keaau transfer station entry...

okay, being the newbie in the area, hotzcatz, which park in kurtistown? we were trying to locate a place to fill our bottles/gallons. we ended up at a gas station way down in hilo town area and paid 30 cents/gal. that's a bargain to me. if one were to buy said gallon in the supermarket, one would pay anywhere between 2-3 bucks.

There are Spigots at the park about 3-4 miles up the highway Volcano direction of the Keaau McDonalds. It's a small park on the right hand side of the road as your going up.
(Just past the 7-11 on the right after the intersection)

The County used to have a map of the water supply included with the water quality report that was sent to those on the "water grid" with the water bill... they stopped a while ago, because of concerns over safeguarding the water supply.

We drink and cook with county water rather than our catchment stuff. I know the taste varies from well to well. Generally, Hilo water tastes pretty good. Pahoa water is next. The Kalapana spigots aren't as tasty, and Kona water tastes like it has alka seltzer in it [xx(]. No matter where it comes from, a britta filter makes it taste much better. I see people feeding quarters into water vending machines and have to wonder why they don't just filter it themselves. Britta filters (and Pur ?) are available in ten packs from Costco fo cheaper.
