Motion Security Lights Recommendations? - ef9 - 01-10-2009
I purchased the Heath Zenith wireless Motion Security Lights from Home Depot last year. By the time I figured out they sucked, I couldn't return them to Home Depot. These have a wireless motion sensor that is operated by batteries.
I would want to know what brand is good? I really like the convenience of them, as I do walk around the house at night and like the convenience of them lighting up automatically, and shutting off automatically as well.
One person told me to try the WalMart ones, I think they are Brinks brand.

Only problem with the motion lights is having them going on and off repeatedly due to feral cats and the "big" bugs that fly at night.

I only have one feral cat in my area that triggers the motion lights. I have not noted any big bugs that trigger them. There is a sensitivity adjustment, you can try that.

I'll try it Stan. The big black moths are what set it off mostly. Those and the smaller brown ones.

Some of the problems people encounter, especially with the cheaper units, are easily fixed if the instructions are read closely. We have three units that were very erratic. Upon reading the 4 page, small print, instruction sheet I came across a short statement kind of buried in the text. It said "FOR TUNGSTEN BULBS ONLY" and we had CFL BULBS in the fixtures. We made sure that each fixture had at least one, low wattage, tungsten bulb in it along with the CFL's, and low and behold all units are now working properly, consistently. It seems that the bulb resistance is used as a part of the electronic circuitry and the non-tungsten lights are very different.

You are correct. Most security lights are "not compatible" with CFLs. The Heath Zenith ones I have are dimmable units, so they are not to be used with CFLs.
