HPP Haze today - Cindy Blankenship - 01-14-2009

Does anyone else notice the vog in HPP today?

I find the air quality maps frustrating because they're not all that local. For example the NPS one linked below indicates levels near the sources but not down here. It says that depending on winds, etc. the sulfur dioxide can even be worse in other locations than up there. Sure seems bad today and yet Pu`uho (recorded at Jaggar Museum) is shown as moderate and Halema`uma`u (recorded at Visitor Center) is good. I do see a couple spikes to unhealthy rating (red) at Visitor Center around 9:30 and 10:30...guess that explains it, that and the trade winds have been pretty still.

I read if you mix baking soda into water, soak a rag in it and then hang the rag on a fan, it helps to break down the SO2 in the air...am thinking an A/C in office wouldn't be a bad idea either! At least for the winter when it gets bad here.

Yes, vog has been bad in lower Puna for a couple of days & will be bad possibly until Sat when the trades return. I monitor several sites:

http://hawaii.gov/doh/air-quality/main.html
http://airnow.gov/index.cfm?action=airnow.fcsummary#HI
ftp://gp16.ssd.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/OMI/OMISO2/hawaii.html

It showed 545PPB SO2 in Hilo yesterday afternoon. Each site has different readings, so I take an average. I also pay attention to the wind direction & speed which can clear out vog before the monitors can record & report it. I'm off to Kau where the air is clear today.[Big Grin]

It was beautiful in Kona today! No vog anywhere!

RE: HPP Haze today - missydog1 - 01-14-2009

that's because the winds are blowing Kona!

Forecast is for East Hawai'i to get all the vog the next couple days. Waah.

Thank you for the links and info! Kona winds are warm, come from south and southwest and yes bring vog. Even without Kona wind conditions, I sometimes wake up to vog at night. I think this is because the trade winds stop blowing late at night..and then pick up again in the afternoon? Perfect time to visit Kona!

It's bad again this morning in HPP! Worst I've seen and smelled in awhile!

RE: HPP Haze today - punafish - 01-20-2009

Whenever I say "it's the worst vog I've seen" the weather gods seem to take it as a challenge.

Kona weather WAS beautiful yesterday. Spend the day at Hapuna playing in the waves...

Wonder how it looks in Kapoho right now...?

We have a bit of vog this morning in Hilo. It has yet to be so bad that I could smell it. The sun is ever so bright, I keep thinking it is like fog and will burn off.
