Homeowners Insurance in Nanawale est. - DickWilson - 03-06-2009

We are looking to purchase in Nanawale estates and find out State Farm doesn't write in Lava zone 2. Need to know who does and some idea of cost. Mahalolo

HPIA will provide policy in Lava Zone 1 and 2. I got mine through Business Insurance Services in Hilo, my agent is Duane Sugihara.

Thanks John, We'll give him a call. We were beginning to worry, that insurance was going to be Lloyds.

Is it true that there is only one insurance company that will provide insurance in lava zone 1 ?

Might try Kevin Yee over at Pyramid Insurance. Great guy.

Dick, I'm curious. Does it not concern you to buy in Lava Zone 1? I noticed when I looked at property in '07 how real estate agents on this side tend to ignore the lava zone other than as it hinders financing and insurance.

It's easy to get in the mindset that because Kilauea has been using more or less the same area to vent from for about three decades, that it will stay that way, but it's not that long ago that the ground opened up in Kapoho.

I thought about living on the East Rift Zone and I didn't like the gamble.
I know some people say they are OK if the lava does come and take the house and land.
Are you OK with it, or do you just believe it probably won't happen?

Kathy,
We all live on the flanks of the most active volcano in the world. I don’t really think it matters much where you call home on either of the two east side volcanos.
Think about it in 84 when Mauna Loa opened up and the lava stopped 3 +/- miles from Hilo.
Do you think that those folks thought they would be devastated by a flow?
We all know the risks of living here so……………..pick a spot and don’t worry about it.
We live in LZ 2 and had no problem getting insurance including hurricane.

Kathy, as you know, I own a house in Lava Zone 1. In fact, I have owned six houses there during the years. The way I see it, if the lava ever reaches as far as Leilani Estates or Nanawale Estates, this whole island will be screwed and the value of all properties will be pretty much worthless regardless of where they are.
PS. Lava viewing air tours from Honolulu will be doing pretty well though! [Big Grin][Big Grin][Big Grin]
