container alternative - skydawg - 02-05-2009

I`m in the early planning stages of a move to Puna(2012,hopefully)from NJ.I have a lot of "stuff",but not enough to fill a 20`container.I`m thinking of buying a good sized box truck(used),like the ones used by supermarket vendors here, loading and driving to CA for shipping.Does anyone know if a shipper will accept a loaded truck?I`ve seen other posters say their vehicles had to be empty.I hope I can do it my way,it would solve lots of logistical problems. Thanks for any ideas. Tom

Best idea is to talk to the shippers. Any other rumors could just get you into trouble.

We looked and never found a shipper that would let you ship a vehicle that was loaded.

Checking with various shippers is the best suggestion.

When investigating shipping a travel trailer with Pasha it had to be empty!

I would think the PURCHASE of a container would be good thinking. Gives you instant storage that is secure when you get to Hawaii.

You can of course purchase a container. I don't think the shipping companies will give you any break on that though. The shipping charge will be the same no matter whose container you use, yours or theirs.

skydawg - as others have said "check/talk with various shippers" - All the Hawaii shippers, Matson, Horizon, Pasha - have excellent websites with FAQ's sections.

The only one that allowed a loaded vehicle was Matson - BUT it had to be in a container - kind of defeats your purpose.

We bought our own containers (as others have suggested) and it has worked out great - so far!

Honolulu Freight will also ship your car loaded with stuff; they did ours from Seattle. The driver's seat area must be free but the rest can be packed to the gills, and the whole thing gets loaded into their container (by them). You just drive it to their yard. On this end it was waiting for us at Kona Trans in Hilo.
They have all the info on their website.

This ONLY is from Seattle. Their Oakland and LA branches do not allow your car to have anything in them. We thought it was a great concept, but they only do it from the Seattle Port.

We ended up using PASHA which was great, but we had to send our cars over empty. We got both cars within 12 days of shipping them right on time. Not a scratch on either of them.

Our container is STILL at sea after 30 days and we have no idea when it will be here, nor do we really care. We are enjoying the time here with much less stuff.

Rob is correct - cost to ship is same whether a company container or you own it. We bought and shipped a 20ft, no shipping break.
