Mauna Kea Observatory visits - Rob Tucker - 02-07-2009

Does anyone know who to contact to obtain an appointment for an inside tour of one or more of the Mauna Kea observatories?

I have an elderly relative visiting who would like to get up close to one of the telescopes.

Mahalo,

Andrew Cooper at The Darker View would be an excellent starting place. He has offered me a close up behind the scenes look at Keck when we are able to get together on the right day. Leave a comment on his blog and tell him who you are. He knows of Punaweb.

*cough*

Now that I think about it... there is at least one other person who participates on PW that works up there. [Wink]

"The Keck observatory and the UH2.2m telescope have visitors galleries from which the telescope may be viewed at certain times. The Keck gallery is generally open 10am - 4pm Mon-Fri, while the UH 2.2m is usually open 9.30am - 3.30pm Mon-Thu".

as to whether he should go up to the altitude, very elderly could be a risk.

The Visitor Centre has free tours on the weekend where you get to go inside one of the telescope buildings. You have to bring your own 4WD.
