Gravel driveway and older dogs - StillHope - 02-07-2009

I wish they could talk..

My dog is getting older and I noticed he prefers to walk on the narrow concrete strip by the curb avoiding the asphalt on the very long driveway going up the hill where I rent.

In my house I plan to have a gravel driveway.
(Had to cut some of the costs).

I have a questions for those of you who have older dogs and the same type o a driveway :

How bad do you think it is for our older furry friends?

They can talk, you just have to understand them. [Smile] Gravel is soft and your dog most likely will like it. However, if he/she is an indoor/outdoor dog you will have to deal with gravel indoors.

Solution:

Build narrow concrete strip for dog use only.

Solution 2
have a grass walkway for your dog.....(now you need to decide, which type of grass???)

Most gravel here is lava rock (of course you COULD use other $tone....) not as hard bumpy as some rock, but sharp....

Then again, many people do not even have an anything driveway.... many of my neighbor houses (circa the '50's) have carports & then expanses of front yard with no driveway at all, just grass... & these yards have been driven on from the street apron to the carport for 1/2 century.... & these are small lots (of course it is Keaau... where keeping things from growing out of hand is more of the issue..) so you may even get to save some dog pads & $$$

stillhope my old boys do fine on cinder, maybe your dog just thinks that concret walk was for him.. i did have to build them a handicap ramp up to the house, they couldnt do the steps anymore. one is very old, the other is handicaped with both bad hips.. it is more very uneven ground that gets to them. i dont think cinder will be a problem. like carey said, we just had a grass drive for over 25 years, we finially just had blacktop laid a few years ago...

Hey Stillhope, my old lab who is 14. hates the gravel granted he is a house dog he has earned that right by age..I have found since moving here he is really prone to yeast infections in his feet since is exceptionaly clean he licks his feet too much. almost neurotic. but because of it I have never seen a tick or flea on him, of course he is the only one out of the 6 dogs we have that we have been that lucky with everyone else has had fleas or ticks in the past.
i think the grass walkway would be your best bet...

setting my soul free....

SOFT???

John, did you try to walk barepaws on it?

Thank you,everyone for the response.
I decided against cinder after I ask the ? on PW.
Gravel seemed like a good idea, since later on you can just pour the concrete on.
With the grass (and rain) I afraid it's going to be constant mess in the house to clean(he has to have a doggy door).

I guess,I might have to put myself to a strict diet..
I think the concrete driveway will be 8K + on a small "apron "type one?

we have a cinder driveway and it doesn't seem to bother our 3 dogs. our floors are scratched from mom's wheelchair and from the dogs tracking the pebbles in.

$8K?! I had a fairly large driveway with a huge apron done at my Leilani Estate house for $3K. (It was done by Lucky, a punawebber, and I have his contact info if you need it.) On a second thought, why don't you hire me to do it for $6K! [Big Grin]
