Incredible Video Footage of Big Island - 1916 - Guest - 04-23-2009

Just found this video that was uploaded today.

It was shot in 1916 by the Germans I believe.

Simply incredible footage of the Big Island and things that took place in that era:

And what do the Germans focus on? Hawaii 1916....relatively unspoiled. What do they focus on? That's right. The engineering.

What truly trips me out... is the people sitting on the edges of the bridges on those planks as the Sugarcane Train goes rushing by. I wonder how many people died doing that just for enjoyment? And the Car following the train over those bridges... DAMN!

Nice find, Damon!

The title cards are in Dutch but the Youtube listing seems to suggest
it's actually an American short film.

Is it really the Big Island? Apart from the mention of the "Hilo track"
there's nothing that I can recognise, although the railroad does look
like it's going along the Hamakua Coast.

The translations of the title cards (thanks to a friend) :

De Hawaianeilanden in Vogelvlucht.
Birds-eye view of the Hawaiian Islands.

Deze eilanden behooren tot de Sandwich eilanden. Het landschap is zeer bergachtig.
These islands belong to the Sandwich Isles. The landscape is very mountainous.

Een tochtje op de Hilo baan.
A ride on the Hilo track.

De inboorlingen visschen in de brandingen met behulp van werpnetten.
The natives fish in the surf with the help of nets.

Typen uit Hawaian.
Characters from Hawaii.

Met een snelheid van 35 K.M. per uur door de branding.
With a speed of 20 mph through the surf.

ETA: Did some research, it is an American film, either
made by or for Lyman Howe. So no more German stereotypes please!

Damon,
The text is not in Duetsch, but in Dutch.
The Purple Sweet Potato People (actually the husband) are Dutch, so I sent them the link & asked if he could translate
If he does, I will post the translation
Oops. I realized it took me to long to post (got sidetracked..)

Oh, the train shots also show a nice view of a flume & mill area

Thanks PaulW,

I added that to the blog post.

The train shots are still freaking me out!
