Greetings folks,
I'm David and am quite excited to be moving to the big island on the 21st. My 20 foot shipping container was packed last night and we have a little bit of room left in it. It gets picked up at 10am (pacific) tomorrow morning. What that means is if you need anything from the mainland that is a lot cheaper here, you have about 20 hours to get your order in so I can pick it up and get it packed. [
]I'm all about the honor system (aloha system?) so you can pay me when I get there and deliver it. I'm far from rich though, so if we could keep orders below say $100.00, that would help.

I've been asked where my container is, sorry for not stating that in the first post. The container is 45 miles east of Los Angeles, California and will be shipping to the Hilo area. It is set to arrive May 5th and be delivered to me May 6th.

Can you guys help me understand the shipping process and possibly the costs of shipping a tiny car and some household stuff (tv, computers, tools, etc) to Hilo from LA, all in a 20' footer? I would also like to keep the container and use it as a shed so there would be delivery logistics involved from the Hilo port.

I am not sure about the right now, but when we moved, you had to pay the car shipping price with Matson, even if you had it in your container, along with the container price, but this info is kinda old, so you may want to check.

About a car in a container - not only you will be charged the same price as for shipping it separately,but some companies charge extra for hazardous materials.
Not worth it at all.

I can't guess how you could get a car in the container 4 foot to the ground. Once in I guess you just jump it out 4 foot to the ground. Not good for you or the car.

If you drive your loaded car to Seattle, and ship it on PASHA, you can ship it full of stuff for the same price as shipping it empty. This is the only port where you can do so.
If you have your heart set on buying a container, you need to check with the area where you are living to be sure that you can park it there permanently and that it can first be unloaded on the trailer, then set in the spot where you want to keep it. Many areas have rules against even parking a truck that looks like a commercial vehicle, or boats, RV's etc. As someone mentioned here, the containers are 4' off the ground on the trailers, both loading and unloading are done on a trailer. When they "drop" a container, they use a dump truck type of action and you would not want them to do that with your stuff in it, no matter how well you packed.

.....unless you hire Conen's or someone similar to lift it off the chassis with a (sturdy) forklift and set it on the ground....allowing you to unload at ground level. Which is what we did.
