Local Artist work FINALLY online - Art Deco Fan - 03-08-2009 Steven Neill, Puna resident who is represented in galleries throughout the Islands and is collected around the world, finally has a website. Steve doesn't own a computer but his family and fans convinced him to allow us to put something together. We have started with his travel themed work. http://www.vintageaviationsigns.com There is a wealth of info on the airlines that have had an impact on Hawaii as well as the airplanes that made it possible. We are continuing to due more research and adding more details. I'm a flight attendant with United and am anxious to see his recreation of the old United Airlines logo. Should be ready this week and will be posted on the website soon. Eastern and American will be in the works shortly Mahalo Jim Recreating the glory of art deco advertising RE: Local Artist work FINALLY online - Guest - 03-08-2009 As a practicing commercial graphic artist, I have immense appreciation/respect/fondness for Steven's art. Wow, There is something about retro style art that makes me feel good. I think it takes us back to simpler times. He is a master. RE: Local Artist work FINALLY online - Hotzcatz - 03-09-2009 He would also probably be able to make new signs in the classic style as well as repro the old ones, I would think? Not that I need a sign, but something other than vinyl signs is nice to see around town. Kurt Wilson RE: Local Artist work FINALLY online - Art Deco Fan - 03-09-2009 While Steven Neill concentrates on his art work, he has taught his son Jeremy, also a Puna resident all that he knows. Their work has been mainly in Kona. Signworks Hawaii is the company name. Jeremy is a 3rd generation sign painter and an artist in his own right, although he also uses his mac and other technology in his work. Jeremy is going to be putting together a website with all his dad's Hawaiiana work. I work for an airline which is why I got elected to to the travel related art. I've been doing more research for the Pan Am info page. I never realized what a technological achievement the flight from San Francisco to Hawaii was. I have seen several signs like this there. Very cool Hawaiiana too. He also is in a couple of galleries in Kona, a couple in Oahu and one in Maui. Jim Recreating the glory of art deco advertising RE: Local Artist work FINALLY online - LeeE - 03-10-2009 Ditto esnap. Mo Hawaii, mo betta. RE: Local Artist work FINALLY online - gtill - 03-14-2009 Sorry but I worked for Pan Am from 67-69, 3 Union strikes and quit on the 2nd layoff. Not bitter, but both Pan Am and it's unions were corrupt as hell, too many years as a monoply on the transpac routes. RE: Local Artist work FINALLY online - Guest - 03-15-2009 Unions are corrupt by their very nature. They are by design exploitative, it is in their charter. Fire insurance anyone? RE: Local Artist work FINALLY online - Dave Smith - 03-15-2009 quote: Whew! How does one respond to such a blatant generalization, especially one prompted by an experience (gtill's) from nearly four decades ago? All I can say is that unions have their role which is made necessary by corporate greed. They are not perfect, but all one has to do is review the history of labor and see that corporations wrote the book on exploitation. |
