Aaron, since you know this topic, can you explain to everyone where the money for this critical project came from?

RE: Saddle Road Update - JerryCarr - 03-20-2009

Thank you for the update, Aaron. This is already a spectacular route, and having a modern highway will make it safer and easier to transit. I wonder if the car rental companies will lift their prohibition when it is completed.

I didn't see any reports in your links on the re-aligned route of the western end due to the expansion of the Army training area. Any word on where it will go?

Cheers,
Jerry

I use this new road fairly regularly and I for one really appreciate the improvements. A big Mahalo to all those involved and keep up the good work till it's all POW!

Bob, this blog my give some enlightenment on the funding for this project.

As far as I understand, both the federal government and the State of Hawaii are jointly funding this.

Future Saddle Road – West Side

The 1999 Saddle Road EIS selected an alignment (W3) for the western end of Saddle Road that extended from mile marker 42 to Mamalahoa Highway, State Route 190. In 2006, the DOA acquired these lands for future non-live fire military training. The W3 alignment would essentially bisect those lands in two, thereby significantly reducing the area available for training. In light of the impact the W3 alignment would have on the area available training, the DOA has requested that HDOT and FHWA-CFLHD consider an alternative alignment for the western end of Saddle Road. In response, the HDOT and FHWA-CFLHD are preparing a Supplement Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) to evaluate a new alignment (W7) from mile marker 41.5 to Mamalahoa Highway. A draft SEIS is expected to be published later this year. The start of construction on the west side will be dependent on the outcome of the SEIS process and the availability of future funding.
