best dehumidifiers? What kind? Where? - Rob Tucker - 03-24-2009

I am trying to find the best value (cost / performance) and source for dehumidifying a 1,000 sf space.

I bought two Humidex units but they don't fit my need. I may off them for sale in the non-classifieds soon.

Anyone have any direct experience, good or bad, with dehumidiers?

Thanks in advance.

Rob,
I put some rice grains in the salt shaker to absorb moisture. For 1000 sq ft, I estimate you would need, lets see, about two tons. Hope this helps.

At our elevation we are installing an efficient woodburning iron stove for use in the evenings and during several-week-long rainy periods in hopes this stove will dehumidify the airspace somewhat. I'll let you know next year whether or not the outcome matches the theory.

In a clothes closet we have a dehumidifier on the plans and have been told the best units (perhaps surprisingly) come from Sears. If anyone knows otherwise then I'd be interested the make and model you have had good results with in your clothes closet.

Yipes! And where can I get the best price on two tons of salt? Was that Hawaiian sea salt? or Morton's?

Hi Steven,

I bought a couple Sear's units last year and sure enough they both went defective within a week or so. By my experience Sear's mostly sells junk but I appreciate the input.

My interest in dehumidifiers is two fold. One: at home for my wife's health. Two: for a food product processing building I am considering.

We bought 2 from Sears 5 years ago. The power buttons broke after about a year (we have to use the plug to turn them on/off). Otherwise, they've been humming away in the basement.

A window A/C unit might also do the trick without introducing heat into your space. Just keep the temp setting at 'room' to avoid cooling.

I have no experience with dehumidifiers (where I live now we use HUMIDIFIERS but with other products we have had very good experiences with the LG brand if that helps.

Would filtered air ventilation or just plain ol' ventilation help any? Does your wife have difficulty with outside air? Frequently folks are dehumidifying to combat mold and mildew and having a lot of air flow keeps that down. The current trend towards air tight housing has made the mold and mildew outbreaks really impressive when they get started. If you can have the tradewinds blowing through the outbreaks of mold and mildew are much less and tradewinds are free. Saves the expense of buying and running equipment and is a much more "green" building technique.

De-humidifying a food prep area seems a huge task, one always thinks of sinks and water as an integral part of food preparation. Perhaps if only a part of the food prep required low humidity then a separate room could be set aside for it? De-humidifying an entire kitchen seems a most difficult route, IMHO.

I have kept a dehumidified room for over 30 yrs now. I have an old unit, I think it is a Kenmore, but it is built so in at the moment it would be a task to get to it to confirm. I did at one point try to buy a new one from Sears, thinking this older one would be breaking sooner or later, but I returned it within a day because it felt cheap, and made a lot more noise and heat than the older unit, which is still going after something like 10 years from that experience with Sears.

Dehumidifiers and Air Conditioners are the same thing, just blowing the air one way or the other. They both work by heated coils causing condensation of water. So the issues in either case is water and heat removal. The water is simple, but depending on which unit, and how it is set up, the heat can be a problem. I ended up putting the dehumidifier in its own little closet outside of the room I want to keep dry and running 12 inch air ducts to and from it to cycle/dry the air, and keep the heat from getting into the room I am keeping dry. My main reason for running the dry room is camera eq. and film, but over the years that room has become full of just about everything we hold dear.. ie don't want to subject to the elements, as well as drying fruit, herbs, and seeds from the garden, I have even stacked wood in there. And, you can find us in there seeking relief from the vog when it gets really bad. Of course the humbug is paying for all the electricity it uses over the years.
