Pets, Vog, Air Purifiers - Cindy Blankenship - 05-29-2009 Has anyone had pets get sick from the vog this week? I have three cats and one just has not been himself for the past few days. Sleeping a lot more than usual not eating much, not wanting to come inside, very grumpy, etc. I just read that it's recommended to keep pets that are having trouble breathing indoors with windows shut, hepa air purifier and a/c. He appears to be breathing normal, but I'm going to call the vet tomorrow if they're open (the one in HPP). I'm trying to save to move back to the mainland, and that would get us all out of the vog, whereas if I invest in A/C, a couple air purifiers, it will set our move back big time, but if it's necessary that is what I'll do. Our cats are part of our family and Simba, the one I'm concerned about is only 5 y.o. It's so hot in this house and the vog makes me sick, it makes it hard for me to work, so maybe that's what we have to do for our pets and for us. My son's doing the "I told you we should have stayed in Oregon." I don't blame him, but I didn't know after living here for 12 years without ever barely noticing the vog that there'd be a change right after we got here...big change. I feel so bad for the farmers and all losing their crops and flowers. RE: Pets, Vog, Air Purifiers - mdd7000 - 05-30-2009 What area do you live in to have it be such a problem lately? I ask because I have been checking the daily maps showing the direction of the VOG for some time and it looks like the tradewinds are blowing it South and West, off the island? http://www.nature.nps.gov/air/webcams/parks/havoso2alert/havoalert.cfm RE: Pets, Vog, Air Purifiers - lquade - 05-30-2009 hi cindy. yep almost lost a hen sunday from the vog. took me awhile to figure it out. this intermitent difficulty breathing. sunday was the worse, was ready to bury her, but she is fine again. if the pet is asthmatic it is a real problem. RE: Pets, Vog, Air Purifiers - csgray - 05-30-2009 I drive into Hilo from HPP every day and the VOG has started being very thick right about Keaau for weeks now. In Hilo it has been so thick you couldn't even see across the bay some days. The vog maps are just a 15 minute snapshot in time, if you look at the wind direction and wind speed charts you can see that we have had very light variable winds, or no winds, after weeks of winds blowing straight to Hilo. We need stronger trades to resume to clear the air, but the forecast for the next week is more of the same. From my living room right now I can see the VOG belt hanging low in the sky towards Hilo. Cindy, If you were in the Willamette Valley remind your son about the torture of having the few precious months of good clear weather ruined by smoke from field burning. Nothing like having your home enveloped in ash and smoke for days on end! Carol RE: Pets, Vog, Air Purifiers - dakine - 05-30-2009 quote: The VOG map is only based on two points of data, and both of them are at the summit of Kilauea. At the Park Visitor Center and at Jaggar Museum. Levels of intensity, plume direction, distribution etc., are based on the volume of gas, the wind direction, and wind speed as recorded at those two stations. A very limited set of tools to work with methinks. But it does give one a general understanding of the situation. RE: Pets, Vog, Air Purifiers - Carey - 05-30-2009 Cindy, I know that this last week a number of the kids in the school I teach at (Waiakea) have been affected, in much the manner you describe how Simba is feeling (nothing worse than grumpy, out of sorts kids...) & have no doubt little animals would feel the VOG effects. I will keep a look out for any good AC deals (the Aloha Airlines auction last week had an almost new window unit that went for a bargain, so I am sure someone in our cyber community may find another good deal with your heads up) RE: Pets, Vog, Air Purifiers - Hotzcatz - 05-30-2009 Is there anyone you can ship the cat to on the mainland who can take care of it until you get there? That would get the cat out of the vog right away. Kurt Wilson RE: Pets, Vog, Air Purifiers - Kelena - 05-30-2009 I would leave the island as soon as possible. You are not happy. You are worried about your pets, probably unnecessarily, and are inclined to take the advice of a 14 year old. You did the right thing by trying island life, but island life is too trying. I would put all of my energy into leaving before the new school year starts. RE: Pets, Vog, Air Purifiers - mella l - 05-31-2009 Hey Glen! How are you? Not like you to, hey check this out just found it while searching how to harvest Lavender, a really fun spot and full of good info http://www.notmartha.org/ . So Cindy, I hope the pets get some relief from the vog, and you were able to find a suitable room air conditioner to help out. Seems this year has been quite contrary to normal when it comes to weather and wind cycling. So who knows what is normal anymore when it comes to weather! mella l RE: Pets, Vog, Air Purifiers - Chuysmom - 05-31-2009 Ugh! I can't imagine going through that whole move again after such a short period of time. I don't have the energy for it. Have you considered other parts of the island that are not so vog effected? Seems a shame to bail so soon. I hope your animals are better. Our Chuy and Frida are doing fine...no ill effects that I can see. They are just as playful as ever.
