mead/wine making stuff - knieft - 05-09-2009 Anybody know where I can get the carboy, airlocks, etc needed for making mead--it's the same stuff used in making wine (and maybe beer, not sure) locally? Shipping from Amazon or ebay vendors is often more than the items. Cheers, Kirt RE: mead/wine making stuff - csgray - 05-09-2009 I think the party supply place on Keawe used to sell brewing supplies. They would have what you need if they still do. My husband made a sparkiling mead with a champagne yeast that was amazing, you might want to try it. It was much dryer than most mead. Carol RE: mead/wine making stuff - centipede - 05-09-2009 I always thought mead was wine made from honey. Any input/clarification would be appreciated. RE: mead/wine making stuff - mdd7000 - 05-09-2009 From Wikipedia: Mead is a typically alcoholic beverage, made from honey and water via fermentation with yeast. Its alcoholic content may range from that of a mild ale to that of a strong wine. It may be still, carbonated, or sparkling. It may be dry, semi-sweet, or sweet. While it is often referred to as "honey wine",[1] technically mead is no more a honey wine than beer is a malt wine. Depending on local traditions and specific recipes, it may be brewed with spices, fruits, or grain mash. It may be produced by fermentation of honey with grain mash;[2] mead may also, like beer, be flavored with hops[3] to produce a bitter, beer-like flavor. Mead is independently multicultural. It is known from many sources of ancient history throughout Europe, Africa and Asia, although archaeological evidence of it is ambiguous.[4] Its origins are lost in prehistory; ""it can be regarded as the ancestor of all fermented drinks," Maguelonne Toussaint-Samat has observed, "antedating the cultivation of the soil."[5] Claude Lévi-Strauss makes a case for the invention of mead as a marker of the passage "from nature to culture".[6] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mead . RE: mead/wine making stuff - asly - 05-09-2009 http://www.eckraus.com/ I get a lot of my wine making stuff from them, good deal on shipping, even to HI. Cheers! Potential nightmare. RE: mead/wine making stuff - knieft - 05-09-2009 The shop on Keawe (Orchid Isle Party Supplies) does indeed have a section in the back with home brew stuff at what seem to be fair prices. Thanks for the tip, Carol. eckrause.com is a welcome tip too, Ann. Thanks! Kirt RE: mead/wine making stuff - asly - 05-10-2009 Your welcome Kirt, and always up for a glass of mead. We make a pretty tasty blueberry port at times. Ann And then, I dreamt of Hawaii... http://crazypineappledream.blogspot.com/ |
