traveling with a dog - cakelady - 06-09-2009

HELP....we are planning to move from northern california in july to hilo with a dog. Hawaiian air has a pet embargo going on until october.I am starting to freak out because I can't bear to move without him!Has anyone used another airline that accepts pets? I'm trying to avoid to many stops for his comfort but at this point I am open to all options! thank you in advance, Monique

the embargo is because of the temperature. i believe continental airlines has a special area for pets and therefore flies all year round.. give them a call. they are the only ones i know that do that...then you might be able to get an evening flight, the latest or earliet for interisland..

Cakelady, have you done all the proper prep and paperwork to bring a mainland dog into Hawaii? Just asking, since some folks don't know about it.

We flew from Minnesota to Hawaii w/ two dogs during the month of June...

We flew Northwest Airlines...

The dogs flew in the cargo area and it was pressurized and cooled...

And mind you, one of the dogs was a bulldog mix...

And definitely do the direct release option. It may cost you a couple hundred dollars but well worth it.

Someone once told me that if their dog looked like me, they would shave it's butt and train it to walk backwards.

thanks for all the input. All the paperwork is done, he is released for travel July 17. My problem is.....Continental flies from CA to Texas and then to Hawaii....I need a easier flight.

check delta and continental. The vet in kona can do the check in for the state. Its an extra 150$ but bypasses hnl. Delta lax to koa direct is the quickest way to the big island for woof and I, Delta’s aircraft being dog friendly (seperate area in the hold) National car rental has no drop off fee deals for the koa hilo leg.

It could be $250 if after hours or weekends. And Kona Vet Services requires the paperwork to be sent to Honolulu first.

And,BTW,Kona Vet Services had a deal ONLY with UNITED .

We flew with 2 boxers and 2 cats via American from Atlanta to Honolulu in Aug. Of course that was 2005 so things may have changed.

Yes, it's the "temp" thing. The airlines don't want to be responsible for a "death due to exposure", if the air temp is 80+ in the cargo hold, that's the issue.
