illegal dumping - alohaneighbor - 08-09-2009
Two people witness this illegal dumping at Beach Road at Hawaiian Shores on Sunday Aug9th at approximately 2:15PM. Police have been notified. Alleged perpetrators realized it was illegal through verbal and non-verbal actions.
Vehicle was blue pickup truck with tag HKX 864.

Once the police investigates the numbers and information reported the tag will be verified. Reporters will keep you updated.

Remember to carry your digital camera or know how to use your camera phone to document/capture news when you leave the house. I don't condone or encourage "looking for crime" but to just be prepared to report it when you come across it.
Some of these crimes are so elusive that they require distinguished eyes, subtle vigilance, prepared citizens, and lucky timing to capture the evidence.

It astounds me that people will do this because there are easy to use, free transfer stations all over the place. Why would someone essentially make an extra effort to do illegal dumping? Maybe the fines should be $500 per piece dumped?

Laziness is generally the major factor. Having driven the section of Beach Road in question, I can tell you that it is a graveyard of old appliances, larger electronics, and bulky worn out furniture items. There are County-approved procedures in place for disposal of most such items, but they often require a bit of special effort. For example, large appliances are supposed to be taken to the Hilo landfill for special handling. A lot of people are too lazy to go to Hilo. Some items are only accepted at certain transfer stations on certain days of the week or when skip space is available. A lot of people can't be bothered to time their visits. It goes on and on. I grew up in a rural area where a lot of people were rather cavalier about disposing of junk, but I have never seen anything like what goes on around here.

Dumping in the jungle can perhaps be thought of as a trash savings account.
If you later determine that you could use a knob from that dresser or a spring from that old washer you know right were to go for retrieval. Like that junk drawer at home that never gets cleaned out.
