My family has been visiting HI from 1972, stayed at the Sheraton Hilo
Lagoon's, do some of you remember this? Nice Local people worked there
What did you local's do to make this what it is today?
Also why a fence around Luquin's parking lot?
Lets fence around Old Pahoa and put up a toll station to keep it rual?
Newbies are not always New to area. Punatalk a private site for those that think they lived here all their live or a site to express
one's thought's?

I'll try to address your questions to the best of my knowledge and ability.

1. Luquin's has borne the expense of that parking lot, it's purchase and maintenance, for a number of years. This has been a benefit to most all the businesses in the area for some time. Hundreds of thousands of dollars involved. Sal has gotten a small amount of financial help - small - from a couple local businesses. Other's have been rude and abusive to him and felt entitled to depend on his parking situation without financial help much less a little simple respect.

So at a point of tension and annoyance Sal fenced and gated the lot - which is his right to do.

2. No one I know has proposed a fence around Old Pahoa for any purpose whatsoever - except perhaps the County of Hawaii which seems to have a substantial budget for cutting down trees and purchasing chain link.

3. Puna Talk is a forum for the community to discuss issues of local and state interest. It is not intended as a soapbox for people peddling national or world political views. To keep Puna Talk about Puna and Hawaii I restrict the topics to require a Puna or Hawaiian perspective. Some don't like that. That's too bad.

We have experienced over time that some individuals who join have a compelling need to attack people. Perhaps they find this entertaining or perhaps they feel entitled to abuse the hospitality of this site. I try to advise them about what is expected here and try to do it politely. Those who choose to ignore simple Puna talk netiquette are suspended. Blatant antisocial behavior gets a person banned. Thankfully there has only been a small number of such events.

This is a non profit site run with volunteer effort. So when someone becomes excessively time consuming it detracts from the operation of the forum. I generally consider the needs of the community here above the needs of any single individual.

Many hundreds have had no difficulty here and you are, of course, invited to participate on equal terms. It does not matter if you live here or simply consider living or visiting here.

Keep it Puna. Keep it Pono.
