Tough way to wake up - Brooklynjoe - 07-19-2009

Who can tell me why all smoke detectors in the house went off simultaneously (at 4 a.m.) -- not only the hard-wired ones but a battery one?

We're having smoke detector problems all the time. Do you live near the ocean? It could be ocean spray.
Do you live near a dusty road? It could be a large truck going past. Though maybe not likely at 4am.

How did you get them to stop? We had the same problem a few weeks back and had to shut off our power, I assume it's a dead battery somewhere, but don't want to take a chance so will probably have to replace all.

Last month at 1:30 then at 2:00 am all 6 sounded.
I pulled out the one in the MB and that worked.
Back to sleep at 2:15am.

I'm wondering if it may have something to do with the humidity.

Try the search function to look up several threads on smoke detectors going off in the wee hours and possible causes and solutions to this ongoing problem here in the tropics.

Yes, the humidity is certainly one factor.
And no, there is not yet a smoke detector available that will be 100% satisfactory in this climate. But some work better than others.

Thanks for the reminder: we need to blow out our smoke detectors again, get the dust & little buggies cleaned out - that helps a lot with avoiding the too-early wake-up call.

Probably because there was a fire.

Are you serious ????

It's the vog. It creeps in at night when the trade winds slow down. Sometimes you can't even see the vog, but the smoke detectors know it's there. jmo

Either it just stopped or my removing the battery from the one that uses battery. Thanks for all the replies; now I know it wasn't personal about me -- just another thing. And I'm dusting them all out. Mahalo...

Does anyone have smoke detectors that don't keep going off? Maybe more expensive models where you can set the sensitivity?
