anti-virus programs - HADave - 08-14-2006

It was time to renew my virus protection and I would like to find something new that doesn't slow my system down so much. I'm hoping some of the forum gurus might have suggestions. I'd like to have one that offers a trial so I'm sure I like it. I just tried TrendMicro PCillin iiittt rrrreeaaallyyy rrrruuunnnsss slllooowwww.

Thanks for any suggestions

RE: anti-virus programs - Lucy - 08-14-2006

Dave,

We have had trend Micro for a few years and also use Computer Associates. Both are good, sometimes one will pick up something minor that the other did not catch, but not often. I am on Yahoo/server
AKA SBC Global and the virus' are easy to keep away or the spam filtered out into bulk mailbox. We are on wireless and like the whole system currently.

My suggestion, when you are going to get off the PC for the night, run it, who cares how long it takes if it works well, casue I think most all are. And Do you use the quick version or the long version each time? Do you take out a part of the drive that does not need to be scanned, so each time it does not do it because virus' won't be in them anyway? That is the storage on our PC that we just don't scan. My theory is, it saves you so much trouble trying to correct a situation, I just run it when CA reminds me to or before if it is getting slowed down.

Hope that helps and my "theories"! WinkWink
Lucy

Hi Lucy, Hey JR, thanks for the replies. I'm not so concerned at the rate of speed the scan runs, and i have it scheduled to run daily at 4 am whilest I'm in La La Land. I am concerned of the way it slows my processor down, like it is using up lots of memory to run in the background while I'm on the internet. It seems to slow my search/retrevial down alot, I presume it has to filter evrything coming and going in realtime. Most of how it all works is beyond me. However when I disable it my computer just runs munch faster. My system is a couple of years old ---1.8 GHZ processor 256MB SDRAM. I've been trying to load NOD32, which is suppose to be very good but it won't seem to complete the setup process, the final execute "NEXT" button just freezes it all up.

Oh well your all probably more confused than i am now.. It's getting late here and the ole eyes are shutting down. I'll check back tommorrow... Thanks again eh !

RE: anti-virus programs - G. Leis - 08-14-2006

Dave, you might give AVG a shot. It's free and I've used it for over 6 years now with excellent results - and believe me, I definitely mess where I shouldn't be messin' internet-wise so I've had occasion to try virtually all AV acanners at one time or another.

Mella uses Panda Platinum on her machine, but only because it was pre-loaded and included a year's worth of definition updates. It is effective though, and doesn't seem to bog things down too much.

Most of the better known products (Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, etc.) are bloated resource hogs. They are also often difficult to uninstall . . . hell, there's a whole software cottage industry dedicated to rooting out remnants of Symantec products that don't want to remove themselves.

Also, make sure you're covered with spyware protection. I run both Webroot SpySweeper and Sunbelt Software's CounterSpy (both $25ish), but the free Spybot Search & Destroy is well regarded too.

aloha,
Gene

Like Gene said, try AVG. It is free and gets VERY good reviews. Updated daily with new virus info.

RE: anti-virus programs - loffelkopffl - 08-14-2006

i third it, avg is the way to go

RE: anti-virus programs - Aaron S - 08-14-2006

I fourth AVG is the way to go.

RE: anti-virus programs - HADave - 08-14-2006

AVG it is, funny part is I was looking into it before I posted last night. Wasn't so sure it was the real deal, being free and all. We'll give it a try. Gene, thanks for the spyware tip also. OK, time to get-er-done.
