Computer Repair Rec Needed - JerryCarr - 07-24-2009
Aloha all,
I have a friend who needs two computers repaired, one with a software issue, the other with apparent hardware problems. He has found two outfits by searching on line, Computer Doctor (HPP phone exchange) and Da Kine PC (apparently island wide.) Has anyone had any experience with either of these, or some other folks who might be good? My resource guy in this field moved to Oahu, or I would be sending my friend to him.

Jerry: my wife (Pahoa CPA) uses Jeff Gray from NetCom (982-8828 also in HPP, I believe) and recommends him as competent in timely.

I second that motion. Dave is great. He has done work for us and is prompt and efficient. He has the contract for repairs for extended warranties on the big island for Sony, Dell and several other major brands. He recently installed more Ram in my laptop and it is screamin' fast now.

I'm still putting this box back together from it's meltdown last week. We dragged it's carcass up to Falcon computers in Waimea and in twenty minutes it had a new power supply and new memory chip. I then took it home to reload the operating system but once the hardware was working again, that was easy enough. Of course, now it has forgotten a lot of things so I've been reloading all sorts of stuff again. Falcon would have loaded the system, but we were there a half hour before closing on a Saturday so I would have had to have come back the next Monday so we finished it at home.
Just in case anyone needs to know, when you reload the Windoze operating system, it will wipe out everything on your desktop as well as in "My Documents" file. All the emails and address book data from Outlook is also toast. So, storing things in files on your desktop is not a good place to stash stuff. Storing things in a file directly off the hard drive is a safe place for stuff to be when re-installing a windows operating system. Fortunately, the hard drive had been backed up two weeks before the meltdown so the losses were not anywhere near as bad as they could have been.

Always back up files somewhere off of your computer. Also, use a program like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost to image your drive. If you have an image stored on an external HD or DVD you can be back running with almost no loss in as little as a half hour.
