Thanks for letting us know Bullwinkle. More Natural/Local Food choices are better. I for one am looking forward to seeing the new Island Naturals store in the Hilo Shopping Center. It is great that Down to Earth is going in the spot that Island Naturals is vacating!

I sure hope Island Naturals will do as well in their new location. They were so visible in their old location and so easy to access. I love their store and will continue to patronize them wherever they move, but I hope the word will get out so others will too.

RE: health food store - Nalu - 08-14-2009

I shuddered a bit when I read that, I do 75% of my grocery shopping at health food stores, split between Abundant Life and Island naturals. I was affiliated with Down to earth for many years and had to leave after sometime due to their corporate beliefs. I will not elaborate, but am saddened to hear that they are planning to monoploize over here too. While more choices are better for the consumer, I'm not sure Hilo can keep up with the demand, and I'm certain Island Naturals will lose some business. I shop at Island more now, because it is always easier to get a parking spot than it is at Abundant Life. I have to plan my trips to Abundant Life on off market days and non lunch hours. I have had equally hard times finding parking at the Hilo shopping center at any time other than the AM. Even though it will be much easier for me to shop at the new DTE, I will not. Sorry, I usually try to keep my opinions out of these postings and to remain unbiased, but this one kind of hit home.

Nalu I am one that pays particular attention to where I spend my money. I will pass up far more convenient stores up because of things they have done or because of decisions by the corporation. If you are willing I'd love an email from you stating what your problem with Down to Earth is.

Good for Down to Earth filling that spot...

I too wonder about the parking situation for Island Naturals at the shopping center...

You have Kope Kope, Time Warner, a bank, few restaurants, various shops and now them. And they defiinitely will continue to draw their loyal following...
The parking situation is going to be a mad-house. Especially w/ them relocating to Kilauea Ave...

RE: health food store - Devany - 08-14-2009

It is easy to find parking if you shop when others are not... like EARLY am or after 6 pm. I like to get to Hilo at 7:30 on market days. Abundant life opens early on market days too. When I do not plan and have to run out to shop, I almost always end up driving around looking for parking.

RE: health food store - kani-lehua - 08-14-2009

we're big fans of down to earth--shopped their kailua, o'ahu store for years until we moved here. i hope they set-up their buffet. yum! check-out their website for recipes. we like abundant life, too and prefer it over island naturals. the prices seem to be better at AL.

RE: health food store - missydog1 - 08-14-2009

I think Island Naturals is making a huge mistake moving, and so does one or more of their senior people. The owner made this decision but others realize the parking is terrible there. A store needs to cater to all day traffic. If people have to go early to park there that will not support the business. Every time I have to go to that shopping center I have to circle, and I really dislike it. The old location is very convenient for me.

I am the opposite of a morning person and generally go down at the end of the day. I suppose this might work if I go after 5 when some of the other businesses will be closed, but I really don't want to have to go there. I don't particularly like Abundant Life, although many others do. I really don't want to support a national chain, Island Naturals is a big enough chain, so I'm not sure what I'll do come September.
