1 in 6 functionally illiterate in Hawaii, must be a huge problem for employers ... also may explain the propensity to burglary that has been of topic late
edit: at 85% literacy, puts us on par with the republic of the congo

It's worse in Texas where I am at until we can sell a property and move back to our property in HI. Long story best left for another topic. The functional illiteracy rate here in Texas is approximately 33%. Which is rather shocking.
In comparison, I would have to say that the Hawaii educational system is far better if the illiteracy rate is only 1 in 6.

What can one expect when even the signs at Pahoa High have misspellings--recently orientation was spelled wrong, last year a sign said "congradulations".

Lets all get out there and support our libraries in Hawaii before those disappear...
I hit the Hilo one every few weeks. Book rentals are still "free" (I am currently reading Hitchhiker's Guide...again) and videos are $1/week rental, max 10 per card. They have a very large selection to choose from, you'll be surprised. They also accept DVDs as donation.

There is also a CALC adult literacy program at the Hilo Library
Kit Holz is a super nice gal. I had the opportunity to sit in on a class and was very impressed by the guys that were trying to learn to read in order to better their lives and family situations. It was especially interesting to listen to the various techniques they used to hide the illiteracy so people really didnt know.
