Astronomer fatality - Greg - 02-07-2011 My condolences to Tomk on the death of his colleague, Walter Steiger, in a moped accident this weekend. RE: Astronomer fatality - Chuysmom - 02-07-2011 So sad to hear this news. These scientists open our minds and eyes. Galadriel LOTR RE: Astronomer fatality - JerryCarr - 02-07-2011 Steiger translates from German as "climber." Seems appropriate for someone who helped enlighten humanity and climbed for the stars. My condolences. RE: Astronomer fatality - TomK - 02-07-2011 Thanks for those kind words, Greg. I didn't know Walt well, I only met him a couple of times over the years, but he was a pioneer and a very well-loved person both in the astronomy and local communities. He was extremely influential in bringing modern astronomy to Hawaii and making it one of the most important places in the world for observational astronomy. Just seeing some of the emails being passed around today makes it clear how shocked everyone is and how much he will be missed. If anyone knew Walt or perhaps even was taught by him in the past and would like to know about services, please feel free to drop me a line, and I'll let you know what's happening once I know. You know, if I'm driving a moped around when I'm 87 (it'll be a hover-moped by then of course) and come anywhere near to Walt's achievements, I think I will die a very happy man.
