Car rental question - StillHope - 09-18-2009

I will need to rent a car in Kona to drive to Puna and keep it for another 3 days or so until my car is shipped to Hilo.
Any advice where to look for the best deals and decent service?

Try all the big names first: Avis, Hertz, Dollar. Shop around.

People swear by Hawaii Discount Car Rental.

Priceline name your own price can be great, but before you use it you need to study how to bid, and price all the other options. Same before trying Hotwire. If there is any chance of changing your dates, don't use a nonrefundable option like Priceline NYOP.

Most companies will charge you a drop off fee for one way and I think it's worse if you leave the car in Hilo as they have more need for cars in Kona.
Best car rates are for weekends (after noon Thursday, must include a Saturday night), or a 5 day weekly rate. Daily rates suck. What is your timing?

I've always found best prices at Alamo and National.

I'm with KathyH - they always have the best pricing!

I've had Alamo one-way Hilo-Kona without a drop off fee, it may work the other way around.
Watch out for the drop off fee, it can be brutal.

Priceline. I have not rented from anyone else for years, they always have the best prices. However, you need to learn how to bid and you you should check http://biddingfortravel.com to learn what the accepted bids are for your area before you bid.

How about the bus from Kona to Hilo, then pick up the rental car in Hilo, avoiding the drop off charge, etc.?

I didn't think the bus serviced the airport. Even if, what are the chances the flight will connect well?
Isn't there a dog coming over on this flight, and that's why you have to fly into Kona?

We sometimes use Priceline (advantageous if needing a hotel room in combo with a vehicle) but for a car by itself often find the same rates or better deals overall with Budget or Hertz when organizational memberships, special discount code offers, and double or triple airline mileage deals are factored in. Check and you might qualify for anywhere from a 5% to a 20% discount for being a member of a qualifying organization or institution. Whomever you rent from, though, beware accepting a "free upgrade" to a monster van or huge SUV unless you really want to pay substantially more for all the additional gas those roadhogs guzzle.
