I'm sorry you're losing a market with such a cool name (sounds good, have never been there),
Foodland, the new Foodland, is a fine market. Sack n Save is the pits, but I love Foodland. I would be excited. Shootz, I might even drive to Kea'au.

both of which are part of the sullivan family of companies. malama market and whaler's village are their companies, too. imo, malama pahoa has the better produce. quite expensive though. foodland waimea is pretty cool and even has an olive bar.

RE: puna fresh foods becomes foodland - Carey - 10-07-2009

One of the problems that has plagued Puna Fresh Foods is that there are often times when it is Puna Not-So-Fresh Foods. They have a habit of having WAYYY out of date merchandise, even perishables that should have been sold days - weeks before (even have found things that are months past the printed expiration date...) even some of the sale prices posted may be a week or more out of date...

Gotta admit, even though this is a very convenient market for us, I rarely go, only if I absolutely have to, and with the buses in Keaau, I rarely set foot in the store... There is the farmers market across the street, and I would rather go to Hilo on a bus than trust the the 'Fresh'ness of PFF

I've had the same experience as Carey with expired merchandise. Fortunately, I always check closely. Have also been in there when they had rotten produce in the bins. It could only get better, and I'm another who hopes it's like the Foodland in Waimea.

I too loved the name Puna Fresh and the grocery bags with he green fern were cool too! However on two occasions I found out that the Puna not so fresh was in full force. It takes a while to train one self to check the sell by dates, but now I do it all the time no matter where I'm shopping!

I don't know if supplies at Puna Fresh were left out of refrigeration too long or just what the problem was. The store also had an odor about it. There are isolated groceries in No. Cal that have an odor about them, like Albertsons that is no longer around.

Anyway good luck with the Foodland store in Keaau, sounds like it will be a hit!

What I use most is the deli. They do some great lunches.... I will miss the old run down place. I just dont like change - comes from being old and cantankerous me thinks.

First they modernized the 76 with a new added 711, then the urgent care and now puna fresh.... Seems we have no choice but to join the modern world up here - grin

Aloha

Don't say "join the modern world," Bullwinkle. Somebody will launch a protest movement and hold up the renovations for years! [Wink]
