LCROSS Lunar Impact in Hawaii - Carey - 10-07-2009 The impact will not really be in in Hawaii, but on the moon. Hawaii will have a number of programs for this on Thurs. night- Friday morning, Oct. 9 & Imiloa in Hilo will have a sleepover that will highlight the impact at 1:30 am HST Friday Morning - Oct 9. Went to Andy Chaikens talk at Imiloa & found out all of this neat stuff happening right here: If you have a 12" or larger telescope, you may be able to see the impact, or come on down to the Imiloa planetarium (there is a charge for the sleepover, - includes breakfast - & meet 2 real astronauts) Or up onto Mauna Kea (It is FREEZING there at night!) Mauna Kea Great University of Hawaii-owned UH-88 telescope on Mauna Kea is going to be made available for outreach. Details in the works: Andy Chaikin will be at the telescope, amateur involvement with the gathering of the images. John Herrington and Todd May will also be there. 'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai'i 600 `Imiloa Place, Hilo, HI 96720 Free NASA LCROSS Mission Talk and Presentation.— Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 10:00 AM to Noon ETA This is along with 2 FREE teachers Workshops on Thurs. Oct. 8 (they STILL HAVE ROOM IN BOTH) 9 am -3pm & 3-5pm. Maui Astronomy Club Institute for Astronomy, 34 Ohia Ku Street, Pukalani HI 96768 www.mauiastronomyclub.org Open to the public from 11:30 pm to 2:30am. Astronomers are advised to arrive early to set up telescopes, video and CCD cameras. Attendees will be instructed and educated as to timing and nature of event.
